PROVISION OF FOOD. LARGE SUM SPENT BY MINISTRY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A review of the activities of the Ministry of Supply in assisting the Navy, Army, and Air Departments in the provision of food for the armed services was given by the Minister of Supply, Mr Sullivan, in an interview last night. More than £400,000 was expended on food purchases from September 1, 1939, to June 30, 1940, Mr Sullivan said. In that period the value of the meat supply alone was £100,663, with the addition of £25,185 for canned meats and £14,875 for bacon and ham. The value of dairy produce (including butter, cheese, eggs and so forth), purchased in the main period totalled £69,262. The importance of fruit and vegetables had not been overlooked, and the purchases of fresh fruit in this period cost £53,396, while purchases of dried fruit amounted to £BOl7, with the addition of canned fruit and vegetables to the value of £5821.
