CARTERTON

SCHOOL AFFAIRS MEETING OF COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr H. J. McKenzie (chairman) presided at the monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School committee last evening. There were also present: Messrs W. E. Knowles (secretary), J. Finn (treasurer), B. E. Clark, A. G. Rabbitts, C. K. Goodin, G. Stark and R. Williams. An apology for absence was received from Mr P. Beere. The Wellington Education Board ('wrote notifying that subject to the approval of the School Committee and the headmaster, schools in future be opened each day by the recital of the Lord’s prayer. After consideration it was resolved that no action be taken until the matter was more clearly defined by the authorities. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £l7 6s 6d in the general account and £37 19s lOd in number 2 ac- ■ count. Accounts amounting to £42 2s 6d were passed for payment. The Education Department wrote stating that the contract for the carriage of school children from the Ahiaruhe end of the district would expire at the end of the year. It was suggested that where possible unnecessary travel should be curtailed in order to save petrol. Although the contract expired it was not suggested that the present contractor was to be cut out. The matter was fully considered by the committee and it was resolved that the Department be advised that the committee were of opinion that the various routes could not be reduced without undue hardship to the children.

The Featherston School Committee wrste suggesting that a Wairarapa waltzing competition be organised throughout the Wairarapa school districts, from Martinborough to Carterton for the purpose of raising funds for the various schools, the same to be organised and conducted by the Home and Schools’ Associations, and that after the local pair were found in each district a final competition be held at the Anzac Hall. Featherston. The committee decided to take no action in the matter. The Education Board wrote approving of the proposal to grant a holiday ' to the school children on each day of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society's* annual show on October 30 and 31. A letter was received from the Education Board notifying that Miss Shankland, a probationary teacher at Carterton, has been transferred to Pahiatua. It was resolved that the secretarv write to the Education Board asking that an assistant be appointed the Carterton School to replace Miss K Nsnkland. \e headmaster's report, which was \\ ’ted, stated that there had been last Xrfejfeth an average attendance of 383 primary pupils, and that new books had been added to the school library. Four overseas pupils sent to Carterton in connection with the evacuation scheme commenced attending school on Monday. Concerning subsidised labour at the school grounds, it was decided that a letter be forwarded to the Education Board pointing out that there was considerable improvement work necessary in the school grounds, and that this could not be done out of ordinary revenue. The question of cricket material was brought uo and it was resolved that the headmaster (Mr Martin) and Mr Crane procure the necessary material for use at the Holloway Sireet School. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr R. Williams for the chain harrowing he had carried out at the grounds at the South School It was decided that a letter be forwarded to the secretary of the Dental Clinic asking that a meeting of the Clinic committee be called at an early date. The question of the Navy League s appeal to be allowed to delivei lectures to the children in school hours was considered. It was pointed out that a considerable proportion of the children were air-minded and it was considered that the best method would be for a competent lecturer to speak over the air to the children in school hours during the radio session. After discussion it was decided to write to the Education Board suggesting that if lectures by the' Navy League were allowed then facilities should be given to representatives of the air force and i army to address children over the air. DRUIDS’ LODGE FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. ..J The fortnightly meeting of Totara • Lodge No. 3 U.A.0.D., was held last > night. Arch Druid Bro. W. Fryer presiding over a good attendance of members. 4 A vote of condolence with Bro. George James in the death of his infant son, was carried in silence. The Social Security Department forwarded £5 3s sick allowance to lodge members in addition to usual lodge sick pay. The secretary was instructed to purchase health stamps to the value of £l. Four members declared off the sick funds of the lodge, while other members who are sick were favourably reported on by the sick visitors. Owing to benzine restrictions the challenge from Stonehenge Lodge, of Masterton, to play a golf match, was declined. Accounts passed for payment were: — Lodge surgeons, £73 10s; sick pay, £2B 3s 4d; various, £1 10s; total, £lO3 3s 4d. DEMOCRATIC LABOUR PARTY BRANCH FORMED IN CARTERTON. The meeting held in connection with the New Zealand Democratic Labour Party last even-

ing was well attended by local residents and visitors from as far afield as Martinborough. In an address, Mr D. R. Whisker referred to matters concerning modern political events, the rise to power of dictators, the burden of debt and interest the need for vigilance on the part of all peoples, the aftermath of the war and the possible world economic collapse. The reason for the Democratic Labour Party, and its aims and objects were also explained. At the conclusion of the address questions were answered regarding the Democratic Labour Party. The following motion was carried unanimously: —“That a local branch of the New Zealand Democratic Labour Party be formed in Carterton.” A committee of five were elected, and arrangements were made in connection with a proposed visit to Carterton by Messrs J. A. Lee and W. E. Barnard. WOMEN’S DIVISION EUCHRE TOURNAMENT. There was a large attendance at the, euchre tournament held in the Band Room on Saturday evening under the jurisdiction of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, in aid of the Relief of London Fund. The prizewinners were as follow: —Ladies: Mrs Patterson, 1; Miss Bailey, 2. Men: Mrs McCarthy, 1; Mrs Bradbury, 2 (acting). Sharp Earthquake. A sharp earthquake, accompanied by a rumbling noise, was experienced in Carterton at 1.30 o'clock yesterday afternoon. i Personal Items. Miss Shankland, daughter of Mr and Mrs P. Shankland, has been appointed to the staff of the Pahiatua District High School, as a probationary teacher. Cheese Production. In response to the appeal by the Government to the cheese companies to produce more cheese the Bidwill cheese factory has produced 16 tons more as compared with this time last year. On enquiry this morning it was ascertained that the Belvedere factory was considerably ahead of last year's output. The Dalefield factory also shows a very considerable increase and up to yesterday had manufactured 20 tons more than in the corresponding period last year. The Parkvale factory and all others in the vicinity of Carterton are correspondingly up on last year's total. It would appear as if the extra production asked for by the authorities will exceed the most sanguine expectations. First Offender for Drunkenness. On a charge of drunkenness a first offender was convicted and discharged by Mr W. C. M. Sorensen, J.P., at rhe Carterion S.M. Court this morning.
