MAORIS ENTERTAIN

CONCERT AT OPERA HOUSE. PATRIOTIC FUND EFFORT. The Masterton Opera House was comfortably filled last night when an excellent concert was presented in aid of the Provincial Patriotic Fund by the Maoris of the district assisted by local artists. The standard of entertainment was high throughout and the many times received well merited applause. The opening item on the programme was a Maori welcome and greeting to the Mayor. Mi' T. Jordan. He was ceremoniously introduced to members : of the party, and draped in a Maori / mat. In thanking those present for their patronage of the concert Mr Jordan expressed pleasure at seeing the Maori party on the stage, as he considered that it was time they afforded ' themselves more publicity. As a result of the effort the Provincial Fund will benefit to the extent of several pounds. The following was the programme:— Powhiri (Maori welcome and greeting); “Kia-Ora Nga Waka" (Welcome of Seven Canoes): single poi dance, selected songs, by C. Torr; haka, Akuia E;” action song (Uiamai); humorous songs, by Harry Hall; double poi dance; action song (Manu-rere); duet, by Nehu and Aviremu (Tau Marumaru); haka (Tau Katau); songs, by Teo; group poi dance (with canoe action by the boys): Maori battalion song (action song); haka, “Tika-Tonu; quartette, song, by C. Torr, "There’ll Always be an England;'’ action song (Takiri kote ata); long poi; Harry Hall (humorous songs): group singing of popular Maoii airs; action song (Pomakariri); haka (“Mangumangu Taipo"); song, by Teo, canoe poi.
