CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Training Activity at Opaki
(BY
“THE GRAFTER”)
More activity is in evidence at Opaki than for some years past due Ito the increased number of horses which have been brought to that centre for training purposes. The .various trainers have their charges for the most part in good heart. Counter is striding along nicely and it is confidently expected that he |Will salute the judge before long. The Croupier—Thurville representative is undergoing a special preparation for the Masterton meeting. Duncannon is striding along better this season 'than for some time, and T. R. George has Mr J. C. Kennedy’s Inflation—Kilcannon horse in good fettle. Duncannon started the present season well by winning the Flying Handicap at Wanganui last month. Since passing into the hands of T. R. George about the middle of last season, Duncannon has won once and filled second place on five occasions in succession. His other start was at the Manawatu imeeting 'in April, this being his last start for the past season. White Rajah, who is undergoing a solid preparation; for the Masterton meeting, has been (galloping well at Opaki. If he can reproduce his track form at .Masterton he should be in the money. His last win was at the Te Aroha meeting and since then he lifted a stake on four occasions. Par Avion, who followed up his second to Foreign Coin in the Juvenile Handicap at Marton last month, with a brilliant win at Hastings on Saturday, should find considerable favour at the Masterton meeting among those who closely follow form. At the moment the Ringmaster colt is about at his best, though it is expected that he will be in even better condition at the Masterton meeting.

Dictate. Dictate has improved greatly in condition in recent weeks and with a race or two to sharpen him up should be at his best for the New Zealand Cup meeting. An Improved Mare. Ackemma was responsible for a very pleasing gallop over a mile at Invercargill a day of two ago and this Irish Lancer mare promises to develop into a good distance performer. Ackemma contested six races as a three-year-old last season and was successful at her last appearance in that term when she beat a strong field of open hacks at the Riverton meeting. She bears a much more solid appearance now and should be a good moneyspinner for R. E. McLellan’s stable. She is a half-sister to Doubleack and Navua in the same stable. Te Kawiti in Good Form. One of the outstanding performances at the Ohinemuri meeting was that of Te Kawiti in winning the President’s Handicap from end to end. It is only a little more than a year ago that he commenced racing, and he has quickly won his way to a position near the top of the handicap class in Auckland. He has won at his last two starts and, in addition to making all the running, he has finished most impressively, indicating that he is likely to prove a sound stayer. Te Kawiti is a fine-looking four-year-old gelding by Night Raid from Queen March, by Lucullus from March, by Marble Arch from Lady Musket, by Blairgowrie. It is a very successful family, and among the good winners of recent years have been Te Kara, Kahapa, Limarch, King March, Gay Marigold, and Birthday Boy. If he continues improving as he has been doing lately, Te Kawiti may wind up the leading handicap performer of the season in Auckland. His next run is likely to be in the Mitchelson Cup at Ellerslie, aiyl he is almost certain to be one of the favourites.

AUSTRALIAN RACING
MEETING AT RANDWICK DAZZLING WIN FOR BEAU VITE. RECORD BROKEN IN METROPOLITAN HANDICAP. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) SYDNEY, October 7. Beau Vite’s dazzling victory in the Metropolitan at the Australian Jockey Club’s meeting at Randwick today stamps him as a stayer whose class is hard to find in Australia today. He appears, according to experienced followers of the turf, to have a mortgage on the Melbourne Cup. Not since the days of Phar Lap has any horse achieved a double track record at a Randwick meeting as was registered by Beau Vite in the Colin Stephen Stakes and the Metropolitan. His time of 2.42 for the mile and five furlongs today constituted an Australian and New Zealand record. It was hitherto held by Young Crusader, whose 2.42 J was established in 1937. Beau Vite has made all the improvement expected of him as a four-year-old and is expected to provide a real threat to Ajax in the Victorian weight-for-age races. His triumph in the Metropolitan was not relished by the fielders, who had him heavily coupled with High Caste and also Beaulivre in the Epsom. Beaulivre looked fit today, but weakened at the three-furlong post and beat only two home in the Metropolitan. Gold Salute came prominently into the public eye again by a convincing win in the Shorts over a smart field including Vergure in the record time of 1.10. The Breeders’ Plate for colts and geldings went to the speedy chestnut colt Yaralla, by the Buzzard from Even Keel. The consistent New Zealand-bred colt Pinero gained further honours by easily winning the Grantham Stakes. The weather was delightful and the course fast. The attendance was 60,000. Results:— The Shorts, 6f: Gold Salute, 8.10 (Bartie) 1; Caesar, 8.2 (Cook) 2; Flying Knight, 8.4 (McMenamin) 3. Fourteen started. Gold Salute justified the high opinion hitherto held of him and won like a champion in the record time of 1.10 by a length and a quarter, with two lengths between Caesar and Flying Knight. Lyndhurst was fourth and Vergure fifth. Breeders’ Plate, colts and geldings only, sf: Yaralla, 8.5 (McMenamin) 1; King Herod, 8.5 (Munro) 2; Dick Whittington, 8.5 (Thompson) 3. Sixteen started. Yaralla led a spreadeagled field into the straight and won easily by three lengths, with two lengths between second and third. Time, 60. Milan j a was fourth. The Metropolitan, Im sf: Beau Vite, 9.4 (McMenamin) 1; Reading, 9.0 (Munro) 2; Pantier, 7.10 (Cook) 3. Nineteen started. Gundagai and Nahlin were scratched. After a good start Reading soon took command from Beau Vite, Beaulivre, Old Rowley, Dashing Cavalier, Binnia Hero, Mosaic and St Constant. Reading headed the field to the home turn, where Beau Vite dashed past and led along the straight. He opened a gap and finished full of running to win in the most brilliant manner by two lengths in the Australian and New Zealand record time of 2.42. Pantier was three-quarters of a length away third. Dashing Cavalier was fourth and then came Binnia Hero, and Cooranga. Centennial Park Handicap, for three-year-old fillies, lm: Happy Lass, 7.0 (Bartie) 1; Celebration, 8.3 (Ward) 2; Celebrity, 8.9 (Breasley) 3. Ten started. Happy Lass shot to the front in the straight and won comfortably by one length and a half. Celebrity was threequarters of a length away third. Time 1.37 J. Drava was fourth. Grantham Stakes. for three and (four-year-olds, lm If: Pinero. 7.9 (Thompson) 1; His Lordship. 6.12, (Wilson) 2; Chatoona, 7.12 (Bartie) 3. Ten started. One length and a half; threequarters of a length. Time. 1.51 J. John Peel was fourth. Squatters’ Handicap, L’m: Seven Fifty, 8.4 (Munro) 1; Sedunum, 9.7 (Harvey) 2; Gilltown, 8.4 (Cook) 3. Ten started, including Peerless, who finished last. Half a length each way. Time. 2.2 : ;. Lord Valentine was fourth. RUNNING OF BEAULIVRE RUMOURS AND CONJECTURES. OWNER QUESTIONED BY STEWARDS. SYDNEY. October 7. As a result of public rumours and conjecture at the weekend regarding the Beaulivre incident in the Epsom Handicap, the A.J.C. stewards today made further inquiries and questioned
the horse’s owner, Mr E. C. Harnett, who assured the stewards that he was a heavy loser and produced betting tickets and vouchers revealing that he had backed Beaulivre to win many thousands straightout and in doubles. The stewards also heard evidence from the New Zealand jockey, A. E. Ellis, as to Beaulivrh’s running in the Metropolitan today arid reported that Ellis declared that Beaulivre could not have won even had the race been a mile. He finished distressed. CAULFIELD CUP BREASLEY TO RIDE HISTORIAN. MELBOURNE, October 7. A. Breasley will ride Historian in the Caulfield Cup. Scratchings for the Caulfield Clip are Landlaw, Bathing Beauty, Liquid Asset and Progeny. Pandect returned to Melbourne, looking well after his Derby win. Reading will arrive at Melbourne on Saturday, and will run in the Caulfield Cup. Gladynev has been awarded 7.11 in the Herbert Power .Handicap on Saturday. Spanish Lad. Spanish Lad has run some good races on the Wingatui course, and he holds the six furlong time record for the track of lmin 12 3-ssec, which he recorded when he won the Federal Handicap last December under 8.5. At his other appearance at Wingatui last season he was successful in the Publicans’ Handicap with 8.6. After running third with 8.8 to Density (7.9) and Duncannon (8.0) in the Great Easter Handicajo at Riccarton, Spanish Lad won the Templeton Handicap (seven furlongs) under 8.10, the minor places being filled by Rakahanga (7.10) and Nightcalm (8.7). Spanish Lad was the leading stake winner among the Southland-trained horses last season with £ll6O, the result of four wins and two minor places in 16 starts. The Balboa gelding is down to make his next appearance in the Air Force Handicap (six furlongs) at Wingatui this week, and with 8.12 he looks to have an excellent chance of adding to the good record he has at Wingatui. An Ellerslie Change. An important departure from custom was decided upon by the committee of the Auckland Racing Cliib. In order to shorten the period between races and the day’s proceedings, as well as to save horses and riders from being so long in the birdcage and on the racetrack, the usual birdcage parade will be eliminated and the horses sent towards the “Hill,” from where they will do a preliminary up the straight, in reverse direction to that hitherto adopted, and proceed round to the starting point. It is hoped that this will enable the first race to be started each day half an hour later than usual, and the last event to be run off at the usual hour. Place Betting Controversy. There has been controversy in Brisbane following the decision of the Queensland Turf Club committee to withdraw from bookmakers the privilege of betting for a place on courses under the jurisdiction of the club. This action was taken a few years ago by the Australian Jockey Club, and similar differences of opinion were expressed at that time. While one section declares that the diversion of place betting to the totalisator will materially assist clubs to maintain prize money at a high level, the Queensland Breeders, Owners and Trainers’ Association and the bookmakers moved to secure reconsideration of the rule. Tricking the Tcuts. “An astute old English squire, who bred his own horses with a view to the classics and other great races, was at a loss to know why, when his horses did their final trials in private, everyone in the village knew everything about them and forestalled him in the rparket. One year he hit upon the idea of inviting the entire village to a banquet at the manor. Wine flowed freely, and in the early hours of the morning the old squire asked his guests to excuse him for a while. ‘I am going to lock you all in.’ he said, ‘so that I can have my trial for the Cesarewitch on my own.’ ”
