The Admiralty announces that units of the Mediterranean Fleet shelled the Italian naval base of Stampalia in the Dodecanese Islands four nights ago. This occurred during the sweep of the Mediterranean by the British Navy. R.A.F. ATTACKS HARBOURS AND SHIPPING DAMAGED. LONDON, October 5. A Royal Air Force communique in Cairo states:—“We successfully attacked shipping and warehouses at Benghazi. Fires broke out on a large merchantman and also near a naval dockyard, and several hits were scored on small ships. We attacked Tobruk harbour, and bombs fell on small ships moored at the jetty. Military stores and concentrations at Bardia were raided and incendiary bombs dropped on the barracks.” ATTACK ON MALTA ITALIAN PLANE SHOT DOWN. v ANOTHER DAMAGED. (Received This Day, 9.0 a.m.) CAIRO, October 6. A R.A.F. communique states: “Antiaircraft guns at Malta broke up arj Italian formation, whereupon fighters shot down one enemy machine and severely damaged another. “We bombed Fort Saleaya, 40 miles south of Galabat and also hit buildings on the Agordat Railway at Aisha. “South African airmen hit a barracks at Mega. “Our planes returned safely from all these operations.” A naval communique slates that a naval unit bombarded the naval and air base at Stampalia, in the Dodecanese Islands, on the night of October 2.
