WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

■9 SOLWAY-MANAIA. MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the SolwayManaia Institute was held at the Church of the Epiphany on Thursday, there being a good attendance of members and friends who were welcomed by Mrs Munn. The meeting was opened with the singing of “Comrades and Friends” followed by the Aspirations, Prayer for Peace and the “Ode to Friendship." Apologies for absence were received from Mrs Woollett, Mrs McAllister, Mrs Catton, Mrs Catherall and Mrs G. Allen. Three pullovers, 24 balaclavas and 6 pairs of mittens were handed in to the meeting to be passed on to the Navy League. The cake raffle was won by Mrs McGovern. An interesting demonstration was given by Mrs G. Dagg on how to make shopping bags and Christmas novelties from old felt hats. The roll call “Questions” was well responded to by the members, many interesting and humorous answers being given by the members. As a mark of respect to the treasurer, Mrs Woollett, whose mother recently died, the members stood in silence for a few moments. Winners of the competitions were as follow;--Shortbread: Mrs Scrivener, 1; Mrs Munn, 2. Flowers: Best anenome, Mrs Carr, 1; Mrs Munn, 2. Best flower: Mrs Reynolds, 1; Mrs Scriyener, 2. The programme for next month is:— Roll call, “A Famous New Zealander;” sewing, something made from felt flowers; decorated high bowl; best flowering shrub; cooking, various kinds of biscuits made from the following recipe: 1J cups sugar, J- teaspoon baking soda, ? cup milk. Boil all together, let cool, then, add to 4 cups flour, -Jib. butter. Rub butter into flour then add above mixture when cool. Various flavouring may be added to this mixture, cocoanut, spice, bran, orange and ground nuts.
