The Rev P. W. Stevenson, bishopdesignate of the Nelson diocese, will be consecrated bishop in Nelson on November 1. Mr E. P. Fenton, of Fiji, and his son, Mr T. Fenton, are spending a few days in Masterton. Mr Fenton was formerly a well-known resident of Masterton. The many friends of Mr N. J. Bennington, Masterton, will regret to hear that he is a patient in the Masterton Hospital. He is making satisfactory progress towards recovery. Mr N. B. Spencer and Mr A. M. Seaman have been appointed representatives of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce on the executive of the Associated Chambers of Commerce for 1941. Mr George Edward Smith, prominent early in his career as an oarsman and later as a Freemason, died at Lower Hutt on Thursday. Mr Smith was born in Wellington in 1856. Aftei' leaving school he moved to Auckland, serving his apprenticeship in the cabinetmaking trade, and afterward joining the Public Works Department, in which he rose to the post of chief inspector. He retired some 20 years ago, and about that time made his home in Lower Hutt. There he was engaged in the building trade again for several years. The death occurred yesterday at Wellington of Mr William Thomas Hildreth, at the age of 82 years, more than 60 of which were lived in Wellington. Mr Hildreth had a full and interesting life, in his business, in public- affairs, and in recreation. He and Mrs Hildreth came to Wellington from Dunedin in 1878 and his business, the New Zealand Bottle Exchange, was founded nearly 60 years ago. Mr Hildreth's public service included office for several years as a member of the old Karori Borough Council, leading to his election as mayor of Karori, and later to the city council, of which he was a member j from 1915 to 1919 and again from 1929 to 1931. He was also a member of the Wellington Harbour Board for several ■ years.
