TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Prospects for Masterton Meeting

(BY

“THE GRAFTER")

Little Robin, who has been nominated for the two chief events at Masterton, is by Resinous—Little Thrush, and won the Heathcote Handicap at the C.J.C. meeting in August by a head from Lazybones. Last season the Resinous gelding started 18 times for four wins. So far this season he has faced the barrier five times for a win, a third and a fourth. He is owned by Mr J. E. Cotton, and is trained by J. Flanagan. Hasten, who has been entered for the Masterton Handicap, started 18 times last season for two wins, two seconds and two thirds. He won the Farewell Handicap at Masterton in October last and the Crofton Handicap at Trentham in July. This season he has started four times, scoring a win, two seconds and a third. He won the Putiki Handicap at Wanganui easily from Pearl of Asia. Hasten is trained at Masterton by his.owner, Mr J. Mulvaney, and the latter is skilfully getting' his charge into top form. Master Cykion has been entered for the two principal races at Masterton. He could only score a second last season in seven starts, and this season has faced the starter twice without filling a place, but won at the Hawke’s Bay meeting on Thursday. Yogi won four'races last season in eighteen starts and was second four times. He started in the Flying Handicap at Wanganui last month (won by Duncannon) but was never dangerous. Lady Montana is reported to be training well and is in much better form even than when she landed the Higgie Handicap at Wanganui early last month. She is due at any moment to repeat that win, and form suggests that she should be successful at the Masterton Racing Club's meeting. Gay Fox has been galloping on the tracks better than has been the case for some time past. Starting twenty times last season the Foxbridge gelding registered three wins. He should keep the field moving smartly if he starts at Opaki, and the horse which beats him will have Riccarton prospects.

Three-Year-Olds Conspicuous. Three-year-olds were very conspicuous in the novice and hack events at the Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s Spring meeting at Paeroa, Forest Bridge, Volifox, Cillas, Duvach and Gold Money Song all winning. Cillas, Duvach and Gold Money Song were minor placegetters on the first day before scoring on the second and, in addition, Heroic Star, Paymaster and Gay Rosette were also placed. The best form was revealed by Cillas, who was at the top of the weights in his class, and registered two very solid efforts.Consistency was a feature of the form of Cillas as a two-year-old last season, when he raced very unluckily, winning only one small stake, yet proving one of the best of the year by thirds .in the Great Northern Foal Stakes and the Great Norther Champagne Stakes, as a result of which he got up in the weights. Cillas failed by only a head with 9.4 when he made his reappearance in the Kerepeehi Hack Handicap, and he won nicely with 9.7 in the Waitakaruru Hack Handicap. The form did not appear up to classic standard, but it was nevertheless good and, even if he cannot hold his own with the best of his age in the Great Northern Guineas, he appears certain to prove very profitable during the season-

Much interest is likely to be manifested in the form of Cillas when he is. raced at distances beyond a mile, as there is a belief that he has inherited a good deal of stamina from his dam, Monanui, who won the H. O. Nolan Handicap, 1' miles, at Ellerslie in 1935. His sire, Diatomous, was purely a sprinter, but Monanui has a sound pedigree, being by Te Monanui, a solid stayer, from Lady Patience, by Marble Arch from Miss Patience, by Soult from Chiara, by Cuirassier from Ouida, by Yattendon. In appearance Cillas has thrown to the maternal side of his family, being one of the lean type, and, in spite of the fact that he is by a sprinter, middle distances might not be beyond him when his powers are fully developed.

Gold Money Song Should Improve. When Gold Money Song was narrowly defeated by Volifox and Cillas in the Kerepeehi Hack Handicap at Pae- : roa he was not favoured with the best i of luck in running, and it was the ' same when he scored in the Rotokohu I Hack Handicap on the second day. In his second start he overcame the difficulty of being last away by running round the field in the middle stages, and always having the measure of the opposition over the last two furlongs. ; Gold Money Song has undoubtedly inherited much of the brilliance of his | dam, Gold Money, and, although he is inclined to be a little wayward, he looks like proving a very smart performer over short courses. He was rid- < den in his successful efl'ort by G. Smith, i who also won the Rotokohu Hack Han- i dicap on Proud Fox last year. i < Volifox. < On. several occasions as a two-year- < old last season Volifox demonstrated i that she could gallop by running minor < placings, but it was not until she scor- < ed at double figures in the Kerepeehi ( Hack Handicap at the Ohinemuri ( Club’s meeting that she succeeded in. ( winning. She is a full-sister to Fox- ( mond, who 'won earlier in the day in ] the Ngatea Handicap, being by Fox- ] bridge from Volimond, by Limond ] from Tivoli, by Absurd from Roscom- j mon (imp.), by Common. She does not j possess a great deal of size, but she j gives the impression that she will stay j fairly well. More should be heard of j Volifox. who may not take long to j win her way out of hack company, es- j pccially as she is nicely placed in the j weights.

ON THE OPAKI COURSE TRAINING OPERATIONS TODAY. USEFUL WORK INDULGED IN. At the Opaki course this morning a number of horses did good training work. Beau Ciel, Phaleron's Song and Pillory did easy work. Trench Law and Pearl of Asia went over 6 furlongs at three-quarter pace i and finished together. I Beau Coureur and Namesake did about half-pace work. White Rajah and Lady Montana ran 5 furlongs together breaking even time. They did the distance in 1.5. Duncannon and Payroll galloped 3 furlongs on the outside of the course proper in 37secs. Duncannon had a shade the better of the run, although Payroll went well. Happy Ending and Prime Quality went well together over three furlongs in 38secs. Counter, who is looking very well, was worked at about quarter-pace. C.J.C. MEETING NEW ZEALAND CUP.
