BADMINTON MATCH WIN FOR LOCAL TEAM. (“Times-Age” Special.) In a match played in the ’State Theatre on Wednesday night Carterton defeated Red Star, Masterton by 1 point only, after some very close and interesting games. Each team won 6 sets the points being 201 to 203. - During supper Mr Stilburn. on behalf of Red Star, thanked the Carterton Club for the very enjoyable time provided and said that he hoped that another match could be arranged in the near future. Mr Taverner, on behalf of the Carterton Club, suitably replied. The scores in the match are as follow (Carterton players being mentioned first in each instance): — Ladie?’ doubles: Miss B. Peters and Mrs J. E. Dwane beat Miss N. Dixon and Mrs Dixon, 15/12; Mrs Bruce and Miss Hopkins lest to Misses Holtham and Watson, 4/15; Misses Pauling and Hopkins lost to Misses Harrington and Anderson, 8/15. Men’s doubles: Dwane and Reynolds lost to. Peterson and Stilburn, 19/21; Worsfold and Mackie beat Orsborn and Carrig, 21/18; Taverner and Eves beat Roys and Mackay, 21/14. Combined doubles: Dwane and-Mrs Dwane lost to Peterson and Mrs Dixon. 13/21; Mackie and Miss Peters beat Stilburn and Miss Dixon, 23/20; Worsfold and Miss Hopkins lost to Orsborn and Miss Holtham. 19/21; Reynolds and Miss Pauling lost, to Carrig and Miss Watson. 16'21; Eves and Miss Peters beat Roys and Miss Anderson, 21/2; Taverner and Mrs Bruce beat Mackay and Miss Harrington, 24/23. AGRICULTURAL CLUB ENTRIES FOR COMPETITIONS. The Boys’ and Girls' Agricultural Club commenced operations in The Wairarapa in 1922 and this year there are record entries in all competition classes. At the meeting of the committee in July each group was asked to make a special effort to secure entries. The response has been very satisfactory, being as fellows; — Featherston: Root plots, 24; lambs, 19; calves, 47. Martinborough: Root plots, 14; lambs, 17; calves, 13. Greytown: Root plots, 25; lambs, 21; calves, 16. Masterton: Root plots, 31; lambs, 45; calves, 34. Carterton: Root plots, 26; lambs, 46; calves, 33. Totals: Root plots, 120; lambs, 148; calves, 193. Last year’s total were: —Root plots, 46; lambs, 100; calves, 165. BOWLING GREEN OFFICIAL OPENING ON OCTOBER 26. The official opening of the Carterton Bowling Club’s green for the 1940-41 season will take place on Saturday, October 26. Dance at Parkvale. The Parkvale Hall Committee will hold a dance and euchre party at Parkvale on Saturday evening. Good prizes will be given in the euchre tournament. As the proceeds are for the hall funds, there is sure to be a large attendance. Belvedere Gathering. A. dance is to be held in the Belvedere Schoolroom tonight. The proceeds will go towards purchasing gifts for soldiers. Good music and supper will be supplied. Church Services. A Church of England service will be held at Ponatahi on Sunday next, at 2 p.m. Personal Items. Miss S. Knapp, who has been the guest of her grandparents, Mr and Mrs H. Knapp. Pembroke Street, Carterton, for the past month, has returned to her home in Hokitika. Soldiers Leave For Camp. At the Carterton railway station yesterday afternoon a large number of people gathered to give a send-off to the soldiers going into camp. The men were in charge of Mr F. G. Sargent, who had the recruits assembled about 2 o’clock for the purpose of issuing armlets to each of them. The followin'* fourteen men paraded: —Messrs F. G. Sargent, G. S. George, Rex Lawrence, W. Martin, D. Smith, M. A. Meyer. M. W. P. Meyer, lan Mackie, N. Jensen. R. Hodder, P. Bond, W. Harris, W. Morris and L. J. Wiley. Prior to the arrival of the train Pipers J. Mansel and H. Johns played spirited Scotch airs The soldiers were given a rousing send-off. Sergeant-Observer D. J. McPherson, of the R.A.F., also left by the same train. Hockey Team. The Carterton ladies’ hockey team to play Excelsior at Lansdowne on Saturday is as follows:—M. Chambers, M. Parker. T. Compton, T. Collier, N. Finn, V. Ward, F. Jensen. Z. Ward, I. Parker, R. Hopkins, Mrs Playle. Cars will leave the Post Office at 2 p.m.
