SHOP HOURS

CONTROL BY ARBITRATION COURT. MASTERTON BUSINESS MAN’S VIEWS. • The proposal to give the Arbitration Court power to fix the trading hours of shops, included in a clause of the Shops and Offices Amendment Bill now before Parliament, was commented upon today by Mr H. P. Hugo, of Masterton. Mr Hugo said it seemed as if this amounted to an effort to shorten the hours for shops, by closing then either on Friday evening or Saturday morning. So many sections of employees were now working a 40-hour week, that it appeared as if an effort were being made to bring salesmen and saleswomen under the same hours. For instance, the office staff, carters, dressmakers and milliners in his business all worked under the 40-hour week. “It will be a big mistake to shorten our hours any further,” said Mr Hugo. “We must remember that many people cannot do their shopping during week days and Friday night and Saturday morning are very convenient shopping hours for many people, especially in country centres. Any alteration will cause some inconvenience to the public.”
