MANY SHORTAGES
IN GERMANY & OCCUPIED TERRITORIES ENFORCEMENT OF STRICTER RATIONING. SHOCK TO THE POPULATION IN ITALY. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, October 2. Evidence is accumulating of food difficulties in Germany and Germanoccupied territory. In Belgium the coal output has been restricted because of the shortage of electric power and lubricating oil. There is also a shortage of flax. Belgium’s unemployed now total 460,000. Stricter rationing is operating in Denmark. Bread coupons are now necessary even for sandwiches in restaurants. In Italy the curtailment of fats and cooking oils has caused a shock to the population. Bacon, butter and lard rations have been reduced to 10£ ounces a month. s In Germany potato crops have been taken over for army use. The Germans are also short of tobacco as a result of the British blockade, and efforts are being made to increase the local acreage. The bread shortage is also acute.
