Nearly three times the average, British shipping losses in the week ending on September 22 are the highest in any week since the outbreak of war. These increased losses are due principally to the intensified activity of U-boats before the arrival of the United States destroyers.

British, Allied and neutral shipping losses during the week ended on September 22 totalled 159,288 tons.
