STOCK MARKET
SPRING CATTLE FAIR. PRICES AT MASTERTON. A large yarding of all classes of cattle at the first Masterton spring cattle fair of the season, taxed the holding capacity of the yards to the utmost. The yearling cattle had to be held in temporary pens in the sheepyards. There was a very large attendance, buyers being present from Manawatu, Wanganui, Patea, Hunterville, Taihape, South Hawke’s Bay, Bush, and all the Wairarapa districts. A number of cattle, specially yearlings, were still showing signs of the winter. Competition was very keen for any cattle carrying conditions, and medium carry-over sorts were also in demand. A feature of the sale was that the majority of the store cattle were purchased by clients outside the district, about two-thirds of the yarding going away. There was also a large entry of fat cattle, and they remained firm on sale rates. Well-finished heavy cattle met strong competition, and bullocks were in good demand. An exceptionally fine line of threeyear P.A.-Hereford cross steers, offered on account of J. P. Perry, Sulphur Wells, topped the market for the day at £lO 14s, and another line of threeyear P.A. Steers, offered on account of Mamaku, fell to the bid of £lO. Twoyear steers were headed by a line of P.A.’s on account of Mamaku Station, at £7 10s, and the top price for the day for yearlings steers was £5 18s account of J. T. Ryan, Ponatahi.
