ORDER OF THE BATH

CONFERRED ON SIR HUGH DOWDING. CHIEF OF THE FIGHTER COMMAND. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, September 30. The King has appointed Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding to be a Knight Grand Cross of the military division of the Order of the Bath. Sir Hugh Dowding is commander-in-chief of the Fighter Command. This high appointment in the Order of the Bath may be taken as an acknowledgement of the success his Fighter Command has obtained against the enemy air force. Responsible for the air defence of Britain, which includes the command of the balloon barrage anti-aircraft guns, searchlights and network observer corps, Air Chief Marshal Dowding is also charged with the duty of deciding when air raid warnings should be sounded.
