WINNING A RAFFLE
MAYOR “TAKEN TO TASK.” LETTER AND A REPLY. “I am shocked to the ‘marrow.’ I never thought I would see American ‘racket’ introduced into New Zealand and to. do it under the cloak of patriotic purposes. Well! well! Another .of my Boy Scout illusions gone west.-P.S. When do we celebrate?” . This communication was received by post from Wellington today by the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, in allusion to his winning the raffle of a building section in aid of the Provincial Patriotic Fund, the winning ticket of which was drawn by the Mayoress. Mr Jordan has replied as follow: — “Many protests, from also starteds. Stakes impounded. Stewards meet tomorrow.” The reference to the stakes having been impounded is to the fact that Mr Jordan has redonated the section for another raffle in aid of the Provincial Patriotic Fund, concerning which a meeting of the committee will be held tomorrow.
