PURCHASE TAX

TO TAKE EARLY EFFECT IN BRITAIN. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) LONDON, September 30. The purchase tax, which will increase the prices of a large number of goods in this country, is not to be put into operation just yet. It was expected that the lax would be imposed on October 1, and some shops displayed notices to this effect. The Government is now engaged in compiling a register of firms liable to the tax. Consideration is also being given to the various complicated points which have arisen. When those have been settled the tax will come into immediate effect.
