AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE
* EXPANSION SINCE OUTBREAK OF WAR. THIRTY-TWO THOUSAND MEN ACCEPTED. Air crew and ground personnel accepted for the Royal Australian Air Force since the outbreak of war total 32,359. Pilots, air observers and wireless air gunners already training number 2,095 and a further 6,663 are on the waiting list. These, the latest figures relating to an Air Force in which New Zealand has a close and friendly interest, are released in New Zealand by the Australian Trade Commissioner (Mr C. E. Critchley). Doing their bit towards improving the efficiency and educational standards of Australian Air Force men are 400 Victorian teachers. These teachers are voluntarily giving their time to educational classes. Applicants for enlistment in air crews must have a knowledge of mathematics and physics up to intermediate and junior certificate standard. Often they lack this qualification, but meet all the other requirements for acceptance. To provide these men with the opportunity of qualifying, the Ail' Board has extended its educational services and a special of instruction in 21 lessons has been made available. These lessons are issued to reservists who are given the opportunity of attending classes or of doing the course by correspondence. Applicants who have not already reached the desired standard of education will have only provisional standing as members of the reserve and their appointment will be confirmed only after the R.A.A.F. course of instruction has been completed satisfactorily. Consequently, all finally accepted air crews will have the standard of education considered necessary for their Air Force training.
