AUSTRALIAN TROOPS

OPERATING IN WESTERN DESERT THE DEFENCES OF EGYPT. WHOLE SYSTEM GREATLY STRENGTHENED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, - September 29. It is officially announced in Cairo that Australian troops are in the Western Desert. They are completing training in preparation for joining the English, French and Indian troops in their operations against, the Italians. The “Daily Telegraph’s” correspondent with a British forward brigade in Egypt on revisiting this position, which had been closed for some months, found improvements and extensions of the defences which seem to make them completely impregnable. He noticed unmistakable evidences of a strengthening of the whole Egyptian defences during a 200-mile journey across the desert.
