Hastings Handicap Weights. The following are the weights for the Hastings Spring Handicap, l.jm, to be decided at the Hawke’s Bay meeting: Siegmund 9.0: Aurora’s Star 8.3; Hunting Cat 8.2; Noble Fox 8.0; Gay Mimic 7.13; Master Cyklon 7.12; Dainty Sheila 7.8. Masterton Nominations. The nominations received for the Masterton Racing Club’s meeting this month should provide good fields allowing Jot the usual withdrawals after the weights or as the result of other conditions. The Masterton Handicap has produced an even quality lot for the most part, with a satisfactory proportion of local horses. The fact that so many Wairarapa-trained horses have been nominated would suggest that the withdrawals will be on the small side, so that .the club can look forward to a greater number of horses being produced at Masterton than for some time past. The support received from outside the district should warrant the anticipation of some excellent racing.
Failed to Make Good. Toro-Koura had every chance to make a return to winning form at Oamaru, but in spite of \ being well placed throughout in the open sprint he was out of the contest a furlong from home. Toro-Koura was operated on for wind trouble, but evidently it still comes against him when any distahce has to be tackled. Haughty Winner. While riding a horse at barrier practice at Riccarton, last week, C. C. McCarthy received a kick below the knee and was unable to get about much for a few days. Consequently, he decided not to take Haughty Winner to the Kurow meeting. Haughty Winner has been nominated for the Masterton Handicap and the C. F. Vallance Memorial Handicap at the local meeting. Cymric. Cymric showed his usual early pace in the Kurow Cup, but as soon as the home turn was reached he was in trouble. This was his first attempt in such company and it would appear as if he will do better if kept to hack class in l the meantime. A Stipendiary Steward. R. E. (Rowley). Hatch, formerly one of New Zealand’s leading pockeys, and later training at Awapuni, has been appointed stipendiary steward to the Gippsland district (Victoria). For some years Hatch has been in Victoria where he held a trainer’s licence. He formerly resided in Masterton, where a brother, Mr R. Hatch, still lives.
Caulfield Cup Favourite. The Beau Fils four-year-old colt, Historian, is now favourite for the Caulfield Cup. He won the Handicap, run at Flemington on September 7, with 8.7, in 2min, 3secs. Historian has 8.4 in the Caulfield Cup. Parchment, the dam of Historian, was got by Markhope from Buffalo Lou, by Carlyon—La Cheville, by Thunderbolt —lnstep, by Lord Clifden. Thunderbolt was got by Musket from Locket, the dam of Necklace and Medallion. Instep is also the dam of Aura, the dam of Auraria, Golden Slipper, and Perle d’Or.
One in Family Enough. A. Reed, who recently retired from race riding after a long and successful career, has, with Mrs Reed, gone into the Centennial Hotel, Kensington, Melbourne. Commenting upon the risks run by jockeys in races, “Doncaster” of the “Argus,” mentioned to Ashley Reed a certain meeting when Mrs Reed was very anxious''about His welfare on account of the greasy state of the going. His only comment was, “She never stopped worrying while I was riding.” “Yes,” chimed in Mrs Reed, “and it cost me a fortune in body-building foods for our boy when he was a youngster. I wanted him to be too big to ride, and I succeeded, too. Just look at him.” We looked, says “Doncaster,” and discovered that the son and heir, Jack Reed, has developed into almost a six-footer. His only hope for a mount would be the top-weight in
a Grand National. Match Races. It is a long time now since a match race was held in Melbourne, the last being that between the ponies Gold Kit and Golden Glove for £5OO a side at Ascot. Gold Kit had the match won from the time the barrier rose. In the early days match racing was very popular. As far back as 1857 a Sydney mare named Veno, owned by Mr G. T. Rowe, father of the present secretary of the Australian Jockey Club, was brought to Melbourne for a match against the grey Alice Hawthorn for £lOOO a side. The story goes that on arrival Mr Rowe, hearing glowing reports about the speed of a gelding named Van Tromp accepted a wager of £5OO to £3OO that Veno would defeat Van Tromp two hours after the match with Alice Hawthorn. The race against Alice Hawthorn was run over three miles, and Veno, carrying 10.1 and starting at 6 to 4 on, won easily. He started at 4 to 1 on against Van Tromp. and again won easily. The last match race run at 1 Flemington was in 1912, when the two-year-olds Wolawa, owned by Mr E. E. D. Clarke, and Tadanga, owned by Mr R. M. Hawker, of South Australia, raced for £5OO a side down the Flemington straight. Wolawa starting at 11 to 8 on defeated the filly by three lengths.
