WHO IS THIS MAN?

♦ Who is this man that’s shocked the world of late, With awful deeds—whose heart is full of hate, Towards the universe and those who therein dwell, Who makes of this bright world a living hell; Who goes through life without a thought of Right, And causes misery with “his Nazi might.” Who is not satisfied with slaying man, But murders women too when’er he can, And little children out upon the sea, Oh God! How can’st thou let such horrors be, And let this monster live to boast and jeer Of frightfulness to those we all hold dear. And we wonder- is it possible that he Once knelt close by a loving mother’s knee, And offered up his prayers to Godabove With heart all full of reverence an'd love, And vowed that he would do the good things too That many other children vow to do. But no —we cannot visualise, This man of awful deeds in such a guise, Impossible we say—it cannot be, That such a child would grow a, man like he Grow up to what he is, and turn his hand To murder lust, by air, by sea, anti land. But life is short and soon must come the day, When Hitler, this vile murderer, must pay. And bitter will the payment be we know When his final marching orders come “to go.” Too late then to haggle, and to fence About the murdered lives of innocence. —Leslie E. Gaskin.
