FIGHTING HALTED
IN FRENCH INDO=CHINA LANDING OF JAPANESE TROOPS. SAID TO BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH AGREEMENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, September 26. A communique issued in Tokio states that eJapanese forces which went by sea made a landing this morning in French Indo-China near Haiphong. This is stated to be in accord with the Hanoi agreement. There is no fresh news of events on the border of Indo-China. A message from Vichy this morning states that the fighting which had apparently been taking place yesterday near Dong Dang has now ceased, and the Japanese envoy, Major-General Nishihara, has succeeded in settling the dispute. There are no reports of any fresh fighting. I •AMERICAN AID REPORTED PROMISES TO INDO-CHINA. NEW YORK, September 26. The “Daily News” says the IndoChina representative in Washington. Colonel Jacomy, is going to Hanoi by air bearing promises of aid short of war from the United States, including permission to buy war materials conditional on Indo-China fighting effectively and remaining independent of Nazi influences. The “Daily News’ added that the Governor of Indo-China, Admiral Decoux, had exploded fears that he was a Nazi puppet. It was now hoped that he would lead the fighting and inspire the remainder of the French colonials. A Washington message states that the Secretary of the Navy. Colonel Knox, said that he had not had conversations regarding the possible use of Singapore by the United States fleet. Ho added that he did not think that the Augusta was going to Singapore.
