Free Frenchmen to Fight Against Germany ENEMY INFILTRATION IN WEST AFRICA POPULATION UNABLE TO EXPRESS ITS WISHES lii a statement on the operations at Dakar, transmitted by the 8.8. C., General de Gaulle, commander of the Free French forces, said Free Frenchmen wished to conserve their arms for lighting against Germany and there would be no relaxation in the efforts of the Free French forces The expedition was never meant to develop into military or naval operations. Although the majority of the population favoured him, there had been so much German infiltration that they could not express their wishes. lie had withdrawn his forces without returning fire and at his request the British naval authorities had decided to desist from their action. The authorities at Dakar, General de Gaulle stated, opened tire under German pressure. The Vichy Government states that as far as France is concerned the Dakar incident is closed.
