Mr C. A. Burgess has resigned his seat on the council of the New Zealand Golf Association, as he will go into camp next week. Mr R. Browning has retired from the office of president of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association. He was secretary to the association for 15 years and had been president since 1937.
Dr Graham Robertson has been granted seven months’ leave of absence and Dr H. G. Rix one month’s leave by the Wellington Hospital Board, to enable them to undertake military duties. The following representatives of the New Zealand wool-growers have been appointed members of the New Zealand Wool Council: —Sir William Perry, Messrs H. D. Acland, L. Maclean and G. C. Warren.
A New Zealand airman, Pilot-Officer Winton Sei wood Shann has been reported missing as a result of operations on Wednesday, according to advice received by his sister, Mrs D. McMillan, Mission Bay, Auckland. He was formerly employed by the Producers’ and Citizens’ Co-operative Assurance Company, Limited, Auckland. Appointments to the Tobacco Board are announced in the Gazette issued last evening. Messrs A. F. Bell and N. Rowling, both of whom retired on July 31, have been reappointed to the board as representatives of the manufacturers and growers respectively. Messrs C. M. Paynter and M. H. Thorn replace Messrs A. H. Spratt and H. A. Thorn as representatives of the manufacturers and growers respectively.
Word has been received that Mi- Wilfred Beech, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Joseph .Beech, Pahiatua, has died at Marlborough Sounds as the result of gunshot wounds accidentally inflicted. The late Mr Beech, who was born and educated in Pahiatua, went to Marlborough Sounds a few years ago wnere he took up farming. A brother, John Beech, is in Egypt with the New Zealand Forces. A well-known Hastings citizen, Mr Walter Sydney Bennett, died yesterday. Born in New Plymouth in 1900, Mr Bennett entered the Post and Telegraph Department when 16 years of age. After five years in New Plymouth he was transferred to the Accountant Department. G.P.0., Wellington. and 14 years ago was transferred to Hastings, where at the time of his death he was head clerk and teller in the money-order branch. The death occurred, after a long illness, in Wellington yesterday of Mr Michael Scanlan. The late Mr Scanlan, who was 47 years of age. was born in Ireland and came to New Zealand 28 years ago. He had resided in Eketahuna and Masterton, and had recently taken up a position in Wellington. He is survived by two brothers. Messrs ■ John Scanlan (Masterton) and Patrick Scanlan (Wellington) and one sis-I ter. Mrs Hayes (Ireland). The funeral I took place in Wellington today.
