CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE

Prospects in Poland Cup

(BY

“THE GRAFTER”)

Much interest is being manifested in the Ohinemuri Jockey Clubs Spring meeting, to be held at Paeroa on Saturday and Monday, especially as it falls only a fortnight before the Auckland Racing Club’s Spring Meeting at Ellerslie, and the form may be illuminating. The chief event, the Poland Cup, one mile and three furlongs, has attracted a field of , and, after his recent victory in the Avondale Cup, Clinch is likely to be the favourite, in sprite of his rise from 7.1 to 8.3. The handicap is on a six pounds higher scale than the Avondale Cup, the top-weight Mazir having gone up from 8.8 in that race to 9.0, so that Clinch is not harshly treated. The horses he defeated in the Avondale Cup he will meet on the following worse terms:-Mazir, 101 b; Valamito, 111 b; Mintlaw, 131 b; Raceline, 17-Hb; Coronation and Day Wind, 161 b. It appears as if Clinch has improved as a result of his recent outing, for which he had an un r usually light preparation, and with the handy weight of 8.3 he is likely to take a lot of beating.

One of the most difficult he may have to beat is Besiege, who has 8.1. At his last start, Besiege won the Centennial Handicap at Matamata in July, carrying 7.84, and winning from end to end on a holding track in 2.12 2-5. Since then he has passed into the ownership of Mr E. Montgomery and is now being trained at Opotiki by M. B. Abbott, who has had charge of him for the past six or seven weeks. The course at Paeroa should not be to the disadvantage of Besiege, and he may be expected to make a bold showing.

The top-weight Mazir may require a little more racing to bring him to winning form, as he started the season burly after a long spell. However, he may be near the stage where he will come on very quickly. The dual Auckland Cup winner Cheval de Volee has not raced since June 22, and he may not be forward enough. Valamito has failed to show any form since being operated upon for respiratory trouble, but he is improving in condition each week, and has not been disgraced in his latest outings. He is now in a nice position in the weights, and it is on the cards that he may soon return .to the winning list. The two races he has had lately are likely to have been beneficial tp Mintlaw, and he is another who may be near to form. He has raced well previously at Paeroa, and with his light weight may add a lot of interest to the contest.

Of those below Mintlaw, the best prospect might be Coronation, wjio showed up prominently with a sharp run on the outside as the field turned for home in the Avondale Cup. He was unable to sustain the effort, but it was very encouraging in view of the fact that he has only recently resumed racing after a long spell. Coronation should go on improving, and is a possibility. Raceline and Sunny Downs have performed creditably over middle distances, and the former has solid condition to assist him. Hunting Bee would appeal more in the hack class, and there has been nothing about the latest efforts of Kilcash and Day Wind to inspire confidence in their prospects. “Archer,” writing in the “New Zealand Herald,” states that the favourites may be Clinch. Besiege, Mintlaw and Valamito.

New Zealand Cup Candidates. There were five New Zealand Cup entrants in the President’s Handicap at Orari on Saturday, and the best form was shown by Swordstick and Passaform, who, nevertheless, were easily beaten by Petersham. Passaform’s effort was encouraging, as he is still on the big side. He went down rather scratchily, and was heavily bandaged in front, making it apparent that he is not as sound as might be wished. Glenora Boy disappointed on Saturday after his good race on the first day, and Nighthawk’s two races at the meeting did not suggest his ability as a two-miler. The Raker ran very poorly, and his displays to date this season have been in distinct contrast to the outstanding form which characterised his hack performances last term.
