CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Willie Win Still a Good Horse
(BY
“THE GRAFTER”)
Willie Win has had several unfortunate experiences at the barrier and it was probably the remembrance of past kicks received prior to the start of races that made him restive at the barrier at Ashburton. He began badly in the Spring Handicap, and was never prominent, finishing at the tail of the field with Shikari. But the run should do him good and he will be a fit horse for Trehtham next month. The Wellington and Watkins Handicaps are distance races that will probably be sorted out for Willie Win, while on the final day there will be the Harcourt Stakes, a mile and a quarter race at weight-for-age. Though he is now nine years of age, Willie Win is not showing any signs of being on the downgrade. Last season he ran away with the Great Autumn Handicap at Riccarton and he still ranks as one of the best stayers trained at Riccarton.
Sprinting Again. Trench Fight has started off sprinting again and so far is standing up to his work well. C. C. McCarthy had the Winning Hit horse about ready for a winning turn late last season when he had to be eased up on account of leg trouble. Getting Through Tasks Nicely. Symbol, the three-year-old halfsister by Gascony to The Crooner, is getting through her tasks nicely and Rangiora is a likely starting off point for her. She is a nippy type of filly and will not require much fast work to fit her for racing. She is inclined to be highly-strung, but McCarthy has the knack of making horses of this type settle down.
A Relative of Norse. Urge, who had two races at Orari, is a three-year-old chestnut gelding by Valkyrian from Spurs, by Royal Stag from Flourish, dam of Norse, and is owned by his breeder, Mr A. S. Elworthy, for whom he is being trained at Washdyke by F. Trilford. Unfortunately, Urge was not in line when the field in the Wainui Handicap on Saturday was sent off, and he was hopelessly left.
May Race at Kurow. Haughty Winner, which failed by a narrow margin to win the Winter Cup. will be given a race in the seven furlongs T. A. Munro Handicap, at the Kurow meeting. He may also race at Washdyke and should be at the peak of his form again for Trentham, his favourite course. At the last spring meeting at Trentham Haughty Winner did not do as well as usual, his best effort being a fourth in the Wainui Handicap. He is very well just now and this season may prove to be his best.
Bright Prospects. All Night, by Nightly from Clorane, was bred in Canterbury by Mr R. Fleming, who put the colt in work as a two-year-old, but did not race him owing to growing. Later, he was acquired by Mr W. Payne, and handed to W. McDonald to train. McDonald had previously trained Solgele and Grecian Prince with a good deal of success for Mr Payne. Clorane was bred by Mr H. A. Knight, who purchased her dam, Belcaire, by Treclare, in Australia. Belcaire is now the property of Mr J. A. McDougall, of the Wairarapa, owner of Nightly, and he has had three foals by Nightly from her. All Night has bright prospects on the turf.
Military Maid. Military Maid ran poorly in her one start at the Wanganui meeting, but it would not surprise to see this Captain Bunsby mare run a greatly improved race on her home track at Foxton. Galteemore. Galteemore has raced well on the flat at Foxton in the past and, despite his recent very poor form, it is not unlikely that he will give a good account of himself in the Paiaki Hurdles on Saturday. Will Not be Neglected. Dorado won the Paiaki Hurdles at the Foxton spring meeting last year and he will not be neglected if he starts in this event on Saturday. The Grandcourt gelding is very well at present and is greatly improved by his recent racing. Queen of Song. Queen of Song, once a power among the best distance horses in the land, may figure in the role of a highweight candidate at the Kurow meeting. It is a definite step on the downward path for a mare that has won over £3500, but the race may be regarded as a stepping stone to better company later on. Bred at Seadown by Mr T. E. Hide, Queen of Song is a nine-year-old bay mare by Song Bird from Differential, a Tractor mare bred by Mr L. C. Hazlett in 1924. Queen of Song has been easily Differentials outstanding foal. The V.R.C. C. B. Fisher Plate, Wellington Cup, C.J.C. Great Autumn Handicap, Riverton and Invercargill Cups, Oamaru President’s and Gardner Memorial Handicaps are numbered among her more important successes, while she was fourth in the Melbourne Cup of 1936 won by Wotan. The veteran Riccarton horseman, J. W. Jennings, has ridden Queen of Song in many of her races and the combination was successful in the Tinwald Handicap, chief race at the Ashburton meeting last November, a race in which she galloped freely for a comfortable win from Swordstick and Parquet. Her other placings in ten other starts were a third to Doubleack and Swordstick in the Wyndham Cup and a second to Willie Win in the Midsummer Handicap at Riccarton in February. Battle Song Arrives. The stallion Battle Song, by Spion Kop from Cradle Song, imported to New Zealand by Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co, on behalf of Mr G. Kain, Orari, South Canterbury, has arrived in Auckland from England, and will be sent south by rail. He won the Irish Derby, and ran second in the Irish St Leger. He is accompanied by two fillies.
