DEEDS OF VALOUR
GEORGE CROSS & MEDAL CONDITIONS OF AWARD TO CIVILIANS. MEN AND WOMEN ALIKE (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 1.16 p.m.) RUGBY, September 23. The new decoration of the George Cross is intended to be a reward for a deed of valour by civilian men and women in all walks of life, like the Victoria Cross, after which it ranks. Posthumous grants may be made and the Cross will be worn before all other orders and other decorations. It will take the place of the Empire gallantry medals, the present holders of which will receive the cross in substitution.
The George Medal will be granted more freely for civilian deeds of bravery, although it is intended tha.t the standard shall be high. Lord Chatfield, chairman of the committee on gallantry awards for civil defence, is charged with ensuring that immediate reports be made by the authorities and organisations concerned.
