EFFORT TO RALLY FREE FRENCHMEN SHIPS OPEN FIRE AFTER PRESENTATION OF ULTIMATUM General de Gaulle has gone to Dakar to rally his followers to the flag of Free France, a 8.8. C. broadcast reports. Recent reports show that Germany had made persistent efforts to bring Dakar under her control and the removal of French warships to Dakar gave further evidence of her attempt to secure control. In view of the fact that a considerable element of the population is opposed to subservience to Berlin, General de Gaulle, decided to proceed there with a Free French force to assist those supporting his cause. He arrived off Dakar yesterday morning and summoned those supporting him to rally their forces. The position is not yet clear. He was accompanied by British forces which will give him full support. General de Gaulle presented an ultimatum asking for the surrender of the town. The ultimatum was refused and the British squadron opened fire.
