BIG FORMATIONS
REPELLED ON APPROACHES TO LONDON FEW PLANES GET THROUGH. REPORTED NAZI LOSSES. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.45 a.m.) , RUGBY, September 23. Four large formations of German raiders are reported to have attempted to reach London this morning by three routes, over the Kent coast, the Essex coast and the Thames Estuary. They were broken up by British fighters and anti-aircraft fire, but a few are reported to have reached the London area, where there was a brief alert warning. Authoritative reports so far received indicate that five enemy aircraft were shot down by British fighters, during the morning's engagements. Press messages, which await confirmation, state that altogether 15 enemy machines were destroyed. GIGANTIC BOMBER PURSUED HOTLY ACROSS CHANNEL HIGH-FLYING FORMATIONS. BROKEN UP BY FIGHTERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.45 a.m.) LONDON, September 23. There were three alerts during the day. The first occurred in the morning, when 200 raiders attempted to reach the City, but only got to the eastern cutskirts. A lone raider caused the second alarm. A new, gigantic fourengined German bomber and three formations, of nine bombers each, crossed the Kent coast this morning, flying at a terrific height, thus outranging the anti-airtraft defences. Spitfires and Hurricanes broke up the formations and the giant was last seen, speeding towards the Channel, hotly pursued. A raider dropped twelve high-ex-plosive bombs on Eastbourne’s work-ing-class district, but there were no deaths. MILLIONS OF EARPLUGS MANUFACTURE IN BRITAIN. GENERAL ISSUE ALSO OF GAS MASKS. (Received This Day, 10.45 p.m.) LONDON, September 20. The Ministry of Home Security is manufacturing millions of earplugs for distribution to local authorities, who are arranging a general issue similarly of gasmasks. RUGBY, September 23. An Air Ministry communique reports:— “Our aircraft all returned safely from widespread operations in Germany, Holland, Belgium and France, which were carried out successfully during last night and the early hours of this morning. Important aluminium works at Lauta, north-east of Dresden, were bombed and fires broke out. Railways in the neighbourhood were attacked at several points, and near Dresden hits were.scored on a supply train. Strong forces of bombers also attacked docks, harbours and shipping at the enemy-occupied ports of Flushing, Antwerp, Dunkirk. Ostend, Zeebrugge, Calais and Brest.” «.
