CARTERTON
SCHOOL ASSOCIATION ENJOYABLE CARD PARTY. (“Times-Age” Special.) Despite lhe inclement weather, there was a splendid attendance at the fortnightly 500 card; party held under the auspices of the Home and School Association. The prize-winners were:— Ladies: Mrs M. E. Meliish, 1; Mrs T. Underhill, 2. Men: Mr J. Hooper, 1; Mrs G. Steffert, 2. Messrs 11. .Knutson and A. Pink donated the prizes for the ladies’ competition. A competition for a turkey, donated by Mrs Denbee, Ahiaruhe, was won by Mr Coleman. At the conclusion of the tournament supper was served. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE ■ PARKVALE BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Parkvale Women’s Institute was held in the Parkvale Hall, there being a large attendance of members over which the President (Mrs B. Renall) presided. The meeting was opened with the Ode to Friendship, the Aspiration and the Prayer for Peace. A letter was received stating the half-yearly Institute Council meeting would be held in the Masonic Hall, Carterton, on Friday, October 25. The members of the Parkvale Institute would act as hostesses, assisted by members of the Matarawa and Dalefield Institutes. Six Christmas parcels for- the soldiers overseas were made up by the Institute. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr W. S. Steven, of Carterton, for baking six Christmas cakes to be included in the parcels for overseas. A roll call “what I should do if I were president,” brought forth very few replies, most of the members preferring to pay a fine. A very interesting demonstration on rucked cushions was given by Mrs E. McGarvie, who explained each phrase of the working. She was accorded a vote of thanks and presented with a shoulder spray. During the afternoon, Miss M. Adlam, on behalf of junior members, made a presentation to Mrs J. Gray, e* who had been recently married, of a crystal vase. Mrs Gray thanked members for their gift. A competition arranged by Miss M. Adlam was won by Mrs M. McKinnon, and another competition for which Miss M. Stent was responsible was won by Mrs N. Peacock. A competition for the best imitation of a pig torn from paper was judged by Mr C. Jensen and was won by Mrs N. Peacock. 1 It was arranged to hold a dance and euchre tournament in aid of funds of lhe institute. The monthly competitions were judged by Mesdames A. Knutson and W. S. Steven, Carterton, for which they were thanked and presented with shoulder sprays. Large entries were received for the sultana cake competition. The cakes will be forwarded to Wellington Y.M.C.A. and are to be used at next Sunday’s soldiers’ tea. The competitions resulted as follows: —Sultana cake, senior, Mrs R. Williams 1, Mrs W. Renall 2, Mrs L. Rayner 3. Best bulb, Mrs R. Williams 1, Mrs L. Rayner 2, Mrs ‘B. Renall 3. Sultana cake (juniors):—Miss F. Rayner 1, Miss J. Warrington 2, Miss M. Adlam 3. Best bulb —Miss N. Williams 1, Miss A. Williams 2,Miss J. Warrington 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames A. F. Stubbs, J. Taplin, M. Tucker and Miss M. Adlam. SOCIAL & DANCE GATHERING AT PARKVALE. Parkvale Hall was comfortably filled last evening with visitors from all parts of the district, when the residents of Parkvale tendered a social to Mr D. W. Adams who has joined the Fleet Air Arm in England. The time was spent in dancing to excellent music supplied by Mrs V. J. Ashton (Carterton) and Mr G. Harding (Masterton). A much appreciated extra was played by Mr J. James. Monte Carlo waltzes were won by Mrs L. Jensen and partner and Mrs Shrouder and Mr A. Adams. Mr A. r - Goulden delighted those present with his singing of Irish songs for which he received encores. Mr Dan Jensen acted as M.C. At a suitable interval Mr C. Jensen referred in eulogistic terms to the guest of honour and wished Mr Adams the best of good luck and a safe return to Carterton. On behalf of the Parkvale and district residents he asked Mr Adams to accept a wristlet watch. Mrs B. Renall, president of the Parkvale Women’s Institute, presented the guest of the evening with a full set of knitted comforts. Mr E. Thompson, on behalf of the Carterton Football Club asked Mr Adams to accept a money belt. He said ! that he hoped Mr Adams would return ; safe and sound to wear the maroon jersey once again. ' Mr Adams thanked the speakers for ■ their kinds words and for the presents. Supper was provided and presided over by the ladies of the district. The gathering was brought to a conclusion with the sing of “Auld Lang Syne” and lhe National Anthem. BOY SCOUTS CARD PARTY. The weekly card party of the Carterton Boy Scout Committee, conducted for patriotic purposes, was held in the Band Room last evening. There was a good attendance and the prizes were won as follow: —Ladies: Mrs Hooper, 1; Mrs J. Martin. 2. Men: Messrs H. Hollings, 1; W. Ticehurst. 2. Mr Huntley, Scoutmaster of the Greytown Troop, was present at the
weekly gathering of the Carterton troop and addressed the boys, giving them valuable advice. Ex-Scoutmaster H. T. Ray also addressed the scouts and expressed the hope that they would be loyal to their new master, Mr Fairbrother. Under the latter’s guidance he felt sure they would increase in numbers and do good work. Red Cross Society. A meeting of the committee of the Carterton branch of the Red Cross Society was held in the Borough Council offices, the Mayor, Mi’ D. L. Taverner, being in the chair. The treasurer reported that the Sick, Wounded and Distress Fund had amounted to £1204. A further donation of £1 Is was received from St. Mark’s Lodge. Amounts received since the last meeting for peace-time activities were: Carterton Scout Committee, £5 10s; Clareville School children, £lO 6s 9d; Mrs R. Baird (cards), £2 2s; Carterton School children, £1 13s; Parkvale School children. £2 3s; Miss Rayner, 7s; Clareville Social Club, £2 10s; Card Club, 12s 6d; subscriptions, 15s. A donation of a knitted bed jacket from Mrs Mortenson was gratefully received. Personal. A very happy time was spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs J. G. Morris, Kent Street, Carterton, on Saturday evening last when Messrs Mark and Maurice Meyer were entertained. There were about 50 friends present including visitors from Hawke’s Bay and Palmerston North. Messrs Mark and Maurice Meyer will shortly go into camp. The time was spent in dancing and singing. Supper was provided. I Slip in County. The recent heavy rain has brought down a number df slips on the Admiral Road and in other parts of the Maunguraki Riding and the Wairarapa South County. Soldiers’ Christmas Parcels. The patriotic committee is busy arranging and packing parcels for New Zealand soldiers overseas, and the various Women’s Divisions are arranging for their quota of gifts to be sent in conjunction with the committee's consignment. All parcels must reach Wellington by Friday, September 20. Bulb Day. On Saturday next, Mr W. Henry Booth’s beautiful bulb plantations will be thrown open to the public for the benefit of the Carterton Plunket Society. The price of admission will be 2s 6d which will include afternoon tea, the picking of the choice bulbs to take away and a round of golf on the Middle Run links. If the weather is fine there should be a very large attendance. The bulbs make a bold display this year.
