Miss J. E. Wiltshire spent the weekend in Hunterville, where she was chief bridesmaid for her aunt. The Hon R. Semple, Minister of National Service, will return to Wellington tomorrow from the north. Dr lan Lauder, formerly of Christchurch, who is on the staff of Melbourne University, has been appointed to a senior lectureship in the physics department of the University of Brisbane. A visit to the East Coast, will be made next week by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, who will leave Wellington for Gisborne either on Monday afterno'on or early on Tuesday morning. He is due to arrive at Gisborne on Tuesday afternoon, and will remain there till Thursday morning. His principal engagement will be the official opening of the new intermediate school, which is already in occupation. Before returning to Wellington about the end of the week the Prime Minister will open another new school in Wairoa. Mr William Goode Hayward died recently in a private hospital in Palmerston North. Mr Hayward was born at Long Sutton, Somerset, in 1855, and was educated at Sherebourne College, England. He was a surveyor and civil engineer by profession and came to New Zealand about 60 years ago and surveyed the block in the centre of the North Island then known as the Forty Mile Bush. In 1899 lie married at St Peter's Church, Wellington, Miss Anne Symes. Puddltrenthide, England. After his marriage Mr Hayward purchased property in the Wairarapa and Manawatu and farmed successfully for many years. He retired about 20 years ago to Palmerston North, where he lived till he entered hospital a few weeks ago. Mr Hayward is survived by his wife, one son, Mr W. H. Hayward, and a daughter, Miss A. Hayward. Mr H. M. Hayward, Wellington, is a brother.
