TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Old American Ride Altered (EY "THE GRAFTER”) The authorities in America have at last decided to alter an old rule regarding starters. The rule provided that a horse was a starter once he stepped on the track. One writer comments as follows:—"Horse players, called the most gullible suckers in American sport, are going to get a break at last,” declared the writer in this newspaper. “The bewhiskered 100-year-old rule, which stipulates that a horse is a starter once the animal has stepped on the track, is to be changed in the 22 States where racing is legal. It is probable that many racing commissions will recognise a horse as a starter after it has been locked in the starting-gate. Then, if the nag can’t get away under its own power, it’s just too bad for the boys who’ve picked it to carry their dough.” In the same newspaper the results of the day’s racing were headed: “How you won—or didn’t.”

A Prospect for Ashburton. Given reasonably good track conditions Winning Rival should take part in the finish of the Ashburton Handicap to be run next Saturday. Her form at the Grand National meeting did not come up to expectations but, if anything, racing appears to have improved her. With 7st 121 b to carry and against a weak field, this looks her big opportunity. May Need Racing. Swordstick (Bst 31b) started another campaign in the Tally-Ho Handicap at the Otago Hunt meeting a week ago, but did not show up. He may need another race or two. Well Enough Placed. Glenora Boy, a six-year-old bay gelding by Lord Warden from Full Swing, a half-sister by Nassau to Nightmarch, did some racing in Australia, winning three races in Mr C. G. Macindoe’s colours as a three-year-old, two over a mile. He is now owned and trained by M. B. Edwards at Yaldhurst and had a race in the Selwyn Handicap on the final day of the Grand National meeting. He is well enough placed in the Ashburton Handicap with 7st 81b if he is good enough.

The win of Tetratina in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui would be pleasing news to those buyers of Theio yearlings at Trentham last January. Included in the number sold were three for the South Island, and all are expected to shape well when called upon to race, Mr H. D. Greenwood has a roan filly from Queen Salute by Chief Ruler, who will race as Salutation, and she has shown plenty of promise for her trainer, F. Roberts. She cost 230 guineas as a yearling. A grey filly, Miss Jessica, from Sicilian, by Crown Imperial 11, is being trained by G. Ridgway for his Wellington owner, Mr S. Ramsay, and she also has attracted attention when associated with Salutation in some recent sprinting tasks. A chestnut fnly from Gaimint, by Catmint, has had the inappropriate name of Theiomint claimed for her. She is being trained for Mr J. Mitchell, of South Canterbury, by J. E. Shaw at Waimate, and cost 85 guineas as a yearling. She was brought to Riccarton with Valens during the Grand National period for educational purposes, and is undoubtedly one of the most attractive youngsters seen out this season, while in the two-year-old parade on Grand National Hurdles day. she showed a turn of speed in her division. Other yearlings by Theio were sold at Trentham as follows: —Chestnut colt from Gay Lass by Lord Quex, Mr E. Simpson, Trentham, for 400 guineas; chestnut colt from Saturation by Lord Quex, Mr F. Rose, Tirau, 100 guineas, and chestnut filly from Huntaway by Hunting Song, Mr C. Wheeler, South Australia, 180 guineas. Historian. New Zealander Stan Reid, who won the Caulfield-Melbourne Cups double with The Trump, appears to have another good candidate in the four-year-old Historian, who was fifth in the Caulfield race last year. Historian was one of those most favoured, after Gladynev, for the Caulfield Cup soon after the appearance of the weights, and he advanced in Melbourne to the second line after winning with 9.2 at Flemington last month. He succeeded again on the same track on Saturday, and lick' cj stoutly to hold oil’ the good grey French horse Landlaw.

Wagner. Wagner (Bst 71b) has a joint in a foreleg that has been giving trouble. Avondale Scratchings. Saxon Tor* was withdrawn from all engagements at the Avondale Jockey Club's spring meeting at 9.6 a.m. on Tuesday. Royce and Kentucky have also been withdrawn from all engagements. The Hawke's Bay two-year-old Theatre, is not making the trip.

Unreliable. The Wrecker (Bst 31b) and Settlement (7st 101 b) are unreliable and cannot be looked to for a win in the AshI burton Handicap. The Wrecker show- ; ed some good form last season but has [failed to hold it. Settlement's record 11 is an unlucky one. but a forward ‘[showing on his part would not be sur- ■ prising, as he had a couple of races Hat the Grand National meeting and j ' they should have hardened him up.
