REP. BASKETBALL BUSH DEFEATS FEILDING. (“Times-Age” Special.) Two representative basketball teams from Feilding journeyed to Pahiatua on Monday night to play the Bush teams in the Drill Hall. The match between the two A teams was for the Oxley Shield who is held by Bush, who retained the trophy, winning by 32 goals to 15 after a very hard game. The B grade match was also won by Bush by 24 goals to 10 after another interesting game. The Bush Basketball Association’s fixtures for next Saturday evening are as follow: Eketahuna v Hukanui, 3.30 p.m.; Hamua v Stars A, 7.15 p.m.; Puis v Konini A, 8 p.m.; Konini B v United. 8.45 p.m.
CHINA MISSION FIELDS INTERESTING ADDRESS. At the Presbyterian Church, Eketahuna, Mrs George McNeur, who has just retired after 36 years' service in the mission fields of China, gave a very interesting address concerning the work and conditions in China. The Rev D. McNeur, Lansdowne, on behalf of the Eketahuna branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union, welcomed and introduced the speaker to the meeting. He also welcomed other local speakers. Mrs McNeur stated that the work in China had been made more difficult owing to the war against the Japanese. The speaker stressed the fact that this missionary work could not be carried on without the help and prayers of the P.W.M.U. members in New Zealand and she thanked the local branch for its generous support. The president of the Eketahuna P.W.M.U. branch, Mrs H. P. Hansen, thanked Mrs McNeur for her interesting and instructive address, and also thanked the Rev and Mrs D. McNeur for conveying Mrs McNeur to Eketahuna from Lansdowne. Afternoon tea was served by local members of the P.W.M.U. SCHOOL COMMITTEE MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna District High School Committee was held on Monday evening, there being present Messrs H. E. Greathead (chair), R. Gallagher, J. Tolley, H. Rogers, S. Daniel (secretary) and the headmaster, Mr A. B. Fordyce. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs R. Farrow and K. Murray. Accounts amounting to £l2 16s lid were passed for payment. It was decided that the caretaker' be given the benefit of the 5 per cent increase in his monthly wages from September 1. . Meetings of the committee will commence at 8 p.m. during the summer months. The headmaster reported that there were at present 162 pupils on the primary roll and 43 on the secondary. Mr Fordyce stated that manure was required for the garden plots, and mentioned that this was available if conveyance could be arranged. It was decided to arrange the conveyance of the manure to the school. The visiting committee reported that the grounds and appointments were at present in excellent condition. Messrs Gallagher and Tolley were appointed the visiting committee. Personal Items. Mrs E. Coster, Stanley Street, is visiting'Wellington. Mr D. Anderson was a visitor to Wellington for the weekend. Mr H. Steer, of the local Post Office, is on his annual leave. Sheepworrying. Now that the lambing season is well advanced owners in the borough would be well advised to keep their dogs on the chain as much as possible. It is reported that a valuable dog was found worrying sheep yesterday and its career was ended by a shot from a farmer’s rifle.
