CARTERTON

ORDER OF DRUIDS TOTARA LODGE. (“Times-Age” Special.) Arch Druid Bro W. Fryer presided over the usual meeting of Totara Lodge, No. 3, held last night. It was reported that five members had declared off the sick funds of the Lodge. Bros George James and G. Bain had been discharged from Greytown Hospital and Bro Joe Fitzgerald admitted to the Greytown Hospital suffering from a broken leg. Bro E. Matson, who is still in Masterton Hospital, is making satsifactory progress toward recovery. Votes of condolence with Bro D. Waterson in the death of his wife, and with Bro A. J. Dew in the death of his infant son were carried in silence. A claim for funeral allowance was received from a member, payment of which was authorised. One proposal for membership was accepted, and the candidate will be initiated at next Lodge meeting. Favourable reports concerning 10 members on the sick funds were received, after which sick pay amounting to £35 5s 4d was passed for payment. Chimney Fire. A prolonged fire alarm sounded on the fire siren about 6.30 o'clock last evening brought firemen promptly to the fire station and in a very short period they were on the way to a blazing chimney in a small cottage close to H. Knutson’s-grocery store. The fire was put out by the use of the bucket pump. Bowling. The annual meeting of the Carterton Bowling Club will be held in t-he club's pavilion on Thursday evening. Several new members are likely to be enrolled. Personal Items. The local Postmaster, Mr Norman Boyne, will retire on superannuation at the end of the present month. Miss Helen Hamer, left this morning on a fortnight’s holiday. She will visit Marton and Wairoa. At the Parkvale Hall tomorrow evening the residents of the district will entertain Mr D. W. Adams, who will /leave shortly to join the British air arm force. During the evening the guest of honour will receive a presentation from the residents.
