WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING OF' MEMBERS (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Women's Institute held on Thursday was opened with the singing of the National Anthem, followed by “The Ode to Friendship” and “The Prayer for Peace.” Mrs D. Fraser presided and the attendance was good. One new member, Mrs Rowden, was welcomed. It was announced that the half-yearly council meeting would be held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall, Eketahuna. Mrs J. Tolley and Miss R. Mitchell were nominated as delegates to attend this meeting. It was decided not to compete this year for the Institute Cup at the Pahiatua Flower Show. A parcel of goods will be made up at the next monthly meeting and sent to the Makogai Leper Station. A collection of 6d per member was taken to provide the institute’s quota of Christmas comforts for New Zealand forces overseas. Mrs Fraser presented posies (made by Mrs and Miss Curry) to two of the eldest members —Mesdames F. Cowlam and Watts, Senr. —who were accorded musical honours. A posy was also sent to Mrs Petersen. Mrs L. Ives sang two songs, “The Last Rose of Summer” and “The Slumber Song.” Miss B. Curry sang “Love’s Old Sweet Song” and “Silver Hair and Heart of Gold.” Both singers were heartily applauded, their singing being greatly enjoyed. A demonstration on making daisy mats was given and several finished articles wer exhibited. The sales stall as usual did business. The competitions, which were judged by Mesdames Cowlam and MurrayAynsley, resulted as follows: Man’s buttonhole, Mrs Baucke 1 and 2 and Mrs Albrechtsen 3. Three polyanthus: Mrs Farrow 1, Mrs Simpson, Junr., 2, and Mrs Shorrman 3. Jar of marmalade: Mrs Richardson 1, Mrs Albrechtsen 2, Mrs Fraser 3. Tatting: Miss M. Hooper 1, Mrs Fraser 2. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Gyde, Bowering and Sturgen. A very pleasant gathering was then brought to a close. REP. BASKETBALL BUSH TEAMS TO PLAY FEILDING. The representative teams of the Bush Basketball Association will play Feilding in the Drill Hall, Pahiatua, on Monday night. The teams will be as follows:—A team: P. Miller, M. Mabey, J. Sowry, J. Henry, N. Squires, N. Hewett, K. O’Brien, K. Brabner, P. Paget. Emergencies: D. Burlace, N. Gunn, N. Etz. B team.—D. Burlace, P. Humphrey, M. Lavell, P. Gunn, F. Reeve, N. Tarrington, N. Etz, C. Rutherford, F. Hayes. Emergencies: R. Kershaw, M. Wenham, N. Targett. The first match will commence at 7.30 p.m. Personal Items. The many friends of Private Bob Anderson, who is in Egypt with the First Echelon, will regret to learn that he has been ill in hospital, but is now convalescent. Mr B. O. Anderson, who spent the winter in Taupo, has returned to the Wairarapa and will leave on Monday on a pig hunting expedition in the North Taranaki district. Mr and Mrs J. H. Berney, Senr., are on a visit to their daughter, Mrs H. A. R. Dunderdale, Masterton. The residents of Rongokokako this week made a presentation of a cheque for a substantial amount to Mr B. Wright, 'who will shortly leave the district. In making the presentation Mr S. H. Smith, on behalf of rhe residents. thanked Mr and Mrs Wright for their co-operation during their long residence in the district. Shop Day. A shop conducted on Thursday by members of the Borough Ladies’ Soldiers’ Comforts Committee proved m'ost successful, the total proceeds amounting to £lB 10s. This will enable the committee to send a Christmas parcel to every local soldier. The president of the committee, Miss M. Anderson, gratefully acknowledges a donation of 10s from Mr W. Shannon as well as many smaller sums. A competition for a cake donat'i by Miss A. Anderson was won by Mr Harry Smith, and Mr Arthur Mason, of Hukanui, won the Sunday dinner.
