TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Bean Vite’s Rider (BY “THE GRAFTER’’) Beau Vite’s owner, Mr Ralph Stewart, stated at Moorefield that he had engaged the crack Sydney horseman, E. McMenamin, to ride the New Zealand stayer in all his Australian races this spring, states the “Sydney Sunday Sun and Guardian.” It is understood that Munro was available for Bet, ~/ ? te’s fi rst Australian race—the Warwick Stakes at Randwick—but he=. v accepted an engagement for Reading in the Metropolitan. The Beau V, . connections wanted a jockey who would ride their horse throughou_ the spring carnivals. Mr Stewart, who.arrived from New Zealand by flying-boat recently, stated that at first he thought he would give the mount to the New Zealand rider, A. E. Ellis.

The Beau Vite ride has been the subject of considerable rumours and conjecture. W. Hickey was first mentioned as the probable rider. Next Munro came into the discussion, and then it was reported that overtures had been made to the Melbourne horseman, H. Badger. McMenamin should suit Beau Vite. Because of the Beau Vite-McMena-min association, Beau Vite now looms as a greater menace to the Australian weight-for-age stars. Last spring, Beau Vite had a variety of riders. A. E. Ellis rode him in the Warwick Stakes at Warwick Farm. W. Cook won the Canterbury Stakes on the colt, then finished second on him in the Craven Plate and fell in the W. S. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley. M. McCarten rode Beau Vite in the A.J.C. Derby. The late W. Lappin rode the New Zealander in the Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick. and the Clarendon Stakes at Rosehill; and N. Percival had the mount in the Victoria Derby and the Melbourne Cup. Overtures have been made, too. for McMenamin to ride Our Barney in the A.J.C. Derby. McMenamin has not accepted finally, but trainer A. G. Papworth has a high opinion of the colt and believes that he will be one of the best of his age this spring. McMenamin is unlikely to pass over the chance of classic victory.
