ALLEGED ARSON
HEARING IN CHRISTCHURCH. LABOURER COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, September 5. On twelve charges of arson in and around the city Robert Hector Butcher, a labourer aged 39, was committed for trial in the Magistrate's Court today. In statements read by detectives Butcher was alleged to have said that he used paper sticks, kerosene and matches during his visits to various premises, which he set alight. He said he did not intend to do damage as great as £BOO at Coronation Hall. AH he wanted was to see the brigade turn out. Detective R. H. Watt, in answer to a question, said it was true that Butcher once applied for a position with a fire brigade.
