ATTACK BY SUBMARINE
BRITISH SHIP HITS BACK WITH EFFECT. PERISCOPE DESTROYED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LISBON, September 4. An Italian submarine attacked the British ship Avoceta (3442 tons) 200 miles from the Portguese coast on August 29. The Avoceta gave battle and her first shell destroyed the periscope of the submarine, which submerged after the Avoceta’s second shot.
