SPRING RACING

OPENED AT AWAPUNI YESTERDAY ‘ Areas Wins Chief Event FLYING HANDICAP GOES TO MASTERTON HORSE (EY ‘’THE GRAFTER”) The spring racing campaign opened at Awapuni yesterday with the first day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting which was transferred from their own course through military occupation at Wanganui. Rain fell steadily for some hours in the early morning, and the prospect was still doubtful enough at the. time people would be setting out for the raceq to keep many at home. Racing was keen throughout the day and as usual with spring racing some of the form was puzzling. The principal race, the Marangi Handicap, was’won decisively by an outsider in Areas, who gave none of his opponents a chance, but there was a great finish, the best of the day, in the Flying Handicap, when Duncannon drove. through on the rails to head off a closely-bunched lot. After the seventh race,, the Putiki Handicap, an inquiry wasihelc into the running of the favourite, Kilometre. The evidence disclosed that the connection; ,'of the horse had genuinely backed him, but he got a bad passage and was unable to do better (than fourth. The explanation was accepted. There was a good attendance and the totalisator handled £18,281 10s, an increase of £7146 on the corresponding day last year at Wanganui.

The lightweight, Areas, owned by Mr W. A. lorns. scored almost a runaway win in the Marangai Handicap at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting yesterday. Areas took the lead off the favourite (Royal Star II) at the end of the first furlong, and was never afterward headed. For most of the journey he was running just ahead of Royal Star 11. Dainty Sheila, and Colonel Bogey, but nearing the straight he slipped away, and the only one that was able to get anywhere near him was Colonel Bogey. Little Robin, in the rear, for most of the running, ran on past the beaten lot into a poor third, with Skyway fourth, then Dorado, Siegmund, and Royal Star 11. The favourite had every chance, and was eased off when beaten. Siegmund ran a good race, and was running on at the right end. Great Finish by Duncannon.

Finishing with a great run on the rails in the straight in the Flying Handicap at the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting at Awapuni yesterday, Duncannon got up in the last few strides* to head off Screen Star and Night Eruption. The outlook changed three or four times in the last couple of furlongs, first Mittie, then Night Eruption, arid then Screen Star getting the upper hand, but Duncannon’s finishing run settled them all. It was a fine effort for a fresh horse. Enrich, having his first race as a three-year-old, began well, but drifted badly in the first two furlongs. He finished on again at the end. Sir Beau did not run on account of the going. Duncannon is trained at Opaki by T. R. George. Australian Items. Following the racing at Randwick, when Beaulivre won the Warwick Stakes and his stable-mate, Mildura, the Cambelltown Handicap, there was some big betting in doubles with horses fancied for the Epsom and Metropolitan Handicaps. Beaulivre is now outright favourite for the former race. Next fancied in order are High Caste. Early Bird, Mildura, El Golea and Radical. Reading, runner-up in the Warwick Stakes, is absolute favourite for the Metropolitan, his chief rivals at the moment being considered to be Beau Vite, Beaulivre. and Buzalong. Landlaw, Mosaic and Millie’s Hope. The Hobartville Stakes was not regarded as throwing much light on the prospects for the A.J.C. Derby, as the winner Flying Knight, is not regarded as a prospective stayer. Perhaps the best Derby trial was that of Lucrative, who, although obviously in need of a race, ran the winner to half a neck. Broadcaster, who was a fancied colt in the autumn showed signs of a return to form by running third. Broadcaster was to have been offered for sale yesterday. on instructions from his owner, Mr P. Miller. John, who beat Lucrative and Flying Knight in the Champagne Stakes at Randwick in March, was running on strongly in the Hobartville Stakes, after being last early. Although the Manfred horse Mildura had won the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington the A.J.C. Doncaster and the King’s Plate at Brisbane last autumn, his success in the Campbelltown Handicap, apparently took his trainer, G. Price, by surprise. Radical, who finished second, was favourite. After the running of the Warwick Stakes W. Cook, the rider of Reading, admitted that his mount had attempted to savage Beaulivre when the New Zealand horse gained the upper hand in the straight. It is stated that two or three times an attempt was made to savage High Caste in his races with that colt.
