CHARITY BALL
BRILLIANT SCENE LAST NIGHT AN OUSTANDING SUCCESS. PRESENTATION OF DEBUTANTES TO ARCHBISHOP. Huge glowing red, white and blue lamp-shades cast a radiant tint over a scene of brilliance in the Masterton Municipal Hall last night, when the Wairarapa Charity Ball, under the auspices of the St Vincent de Paul Society, proved one of the most outstanding social events of the year. Visitors were present from far and near and a large party of men from Tauherenikau Camp helped to swell the large crowd which thronged the hall. The hall was gaily bedecked with flags and bunting with an immense Union Jack worked in streamers as the centrepiece. The stage was decorated in floral, with French begonias making a majestic showing. With due pomp and ceremony, ten debutantes made their debut and were presented to his Grace, Archbishop O’Shea. At 8.45 o'clock a fanfare announced the arrival of the debutantes. With their partners they walked gracefully down the hall and were presented to his Grace. After Archbishop O'Shea had briefly addressed those present, the debutantes were met by their partners at the foot of the carpeted stairway and took part in the debutantes’ 'waltz, amidst applause. In addressing the gathering, Archbishop O'Shea warmly congratulated those responsible for organising the function and commended their work for the relief of distress. He referred to the need of Christian principles being instilled into the young people of today and urged them not to make the mistakes which had been made by many of the present generation. He congratulated the young ladies on making their entrance into adult society.
The following were the debutantes presented: Misses Eileen Talbot (sunray pleated georgette); Betty Skews (Parisian lamb taffeta with ostrich plume); Noeline Kjestrup (white georgette and lace); Ola Curry (white sheer satin); Jean Stevens (lace and pastel floral trimmings); Eileen Devery (white taffeta); Yvonne Freer) cream taffeta); Marjorie Hourigan (white embossed taffeta); Kathleen Thomson (white spotted net over taffeta); Eileen Williams (white organza). A feature of the ball was the excellent supper arrangements which were in the hands of a capable band of ladies. The supper tables were beautifully decorated with blue bells, Japonica and other spring flowers. The room was gay with bunting strung across the ceiling and orange coloured panels on the walls.
Archbishop O’Shea was welcomed by a reception committee comprising Messrs F. Corry, J. Jameson, D. B. Curry, J. W. Card (Mayor of Featherston), E. C. White, J. Savage and L. Robinson.
Mrs A. R. Bunny, gowned in amethyst lace with velvet, and Miss H. Card (Mayoress of Featherston), wearing a black gown with red corsage spray, were the Matrons-of-Honour. The success of the ball was due to the energetic work of the ball committee and in particular to that of the secretary. Miss M. Diggins (black velvet and white fur coat) who spared no effort to ensure the ball being up to the standards of past years. That this was achieved was indicated by the favourable comment passed during the function and the fact that all enjoyed themselves.
The following committee of ladies were responsible for the supper arrangements: Mesdames M. Syron (black georgette and lace with silver sprav), Jamieson (black model French frock), J. Connor (black). P. Hogan (black lace), Stilburn (black and silver), T. Thompson (black floral ninon), Dwyer (floral georgette). S. Herbert (clover embossed satin). J. Hanley (black tafi'eta), N. C.
