Gladynev and Caulfield Cup (BY “THE GRAFTER") Whether Gladynev, the favourite, will start iit the Caulfield Cup depends on his progress in the next few weeks. His trainer, J. T. Jamieson (formerly of Masterton) stated recently that he 'has not invested a penny on the horse because he is too backward in condition. In sporting circles in Sydney his warning is not taken seriously, and inquiries for Gladynev-Maikai and Gladynev-Beau Vite are continuing. < One leading bookmaker has refused to do any more business on these doubles. One well informed person, connected with the Jamieson stable, remarked: “I wouldn’t be surprised if High Caste beats Gladynev in the Caulfield Cup, and proves that the handicapper was right in giving the latter only 6.7.” Since weights have been issued, Gladynev has been the popular fancy, although Jamieson also has High Caste engaged with 8.11, and he appears to be favourably handicapped.
The general opinion in Sydney is that with only 6.7 in the Caulfield Cup, Gladynev has beaten the weights by about 211bs. Bookmakers will get some easy money if Gladynev does not run in the Caulfied Cup, as he has been consistently backed for weeks. One firm alone has laid £20,000 against him with Maikai. and about £15,000 with Beau Vite. The order of preference is:— Caulfield Cup. One mile and a half. Octobed 19. Gladynev. Beaulivre, Historian, Laridlaw, High Caste, Reading, True Flight. Beau Vite, Maikai, Moonray, Prince Ariel, Wilson. Melbourne Cup. Two miles. November 5. Maikai. Beau Vite. Wilson. Apostrophe, Historian, John. Lucrative, Nightbeam, Pandect, Rivette. Mosaic. Pantier, Reading, Sun Valley, Tidal Wave. To Be Sent To Australia. A. J. Martin (Riccarton) .is looking after a brown colt by Night Raid from Cupid’s Bow. This youngster attracted attention at the last Trentham yearling sales, eventually being bought by Mr P. Coyle, of Wellington, for 585gns. He is to be sent to Australia early next year.
Should Win During Spring. Royal Star II began the season to a flying start with an easy success in the six furlongs Waihau Handicap at the combined hunt clubs meeting at New Plymouth. Entered for the Winter Cup but withdrawn, owing to the weight he had. received, Royal Star II wound up last season by winning the Whyte and Winter Oats Handicaps at Trentham. He had won one race earlier in the season, but had been unlucky in many starts. Still, Jie won £1220, a grand return on the outlay of 25gns he cost Mr J. B. Fletcher.
Royal Star II races best out in front and when under way it takes a good horse to head him oil. The Hawera trainer, S. McGreal, has done particularly well with him and the Englishbred horse will only need to keep sound- to win some good races this spring.
Royal Lancer. Royal Lancer, which injured an eye and had to miss the Grand National meeting, is still in A. S. Ellis's stable. He will probably go south for the Dunedin meeting in October and then rejoin the Invercargill team of F. W. Ellis. Royal Lancer, though he failed to get on the winning list, was consistently in a place in most of his races last season. Out of Hack Division. Minority, a four-year-old half-bro-ther by Foxbridge to Majority, returned to form after a number of lapses at the combined hunt meeting at New Plymouth. Minority won three races last season, showing promising sprint form, but he then trained off. His latest success, an easy one, was in the seven furlongs Whenuakura Hack Handicap. Last season he won £535 and in future he will have to do his racing in open company.
Minority is raced by his breeder, Mr G. Tremlett, being from the Lucullus mare Belle Star, which is proving a success as a brood mare. He is trained by R. Johnson at New Plymouth.
An Attractive Galloper. Muffler, a Dunedin Guineas candidate, ran a good race in the Cashmere Plate at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting after starting badly. Muffler is a half-brother by Myosotis to Rebellion. and it should not take long for him to start off on a winning way. He is an attractive galloper in his trials. In Wonderful Order. Winning Rival, despite her Riccarton failures, looks in wonderful order and will not lack for support if given a race at Ashburton. A firmer track may be all that is required'for her to show winning form.
