MAGISTRATE’S COURT BUSINESS AT YESTERDAY'S ' SITTING. (“Times-Age” Special.,) The monthly sitting of the Carterton Magistrate’s Court was held yesterday, Mr H. P. Lawny ,S.M., presiding. Civil Cases. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following civil, cases: — Commissioner of Taxes v. Jas. Taylforth, claim £43 Os lOd, costs £1 17s; lan Hector v. R. Ireland, £1 18s 6d, court costs 8s 6d; lan Hector v. P. L. Darke, £5 7s sd, court costs 15s, solicitor’s fee 15s 6d; A. Kelly v. J. Woodbury, £9, costs £1 10s 6d. Judgment Summonses. Hughes and Cossar Ltd. v. R. N. Campbell, £lB 10s lOd. Defendant was ordered to pay the amount forthwith with £1 Is costs, in default 18 days in Wellington gaol; Carterton District Cooperative Society Ltd. v. J. W. Farmer, £4 Os lOd, to be paid forthwith, in default 4 days in Wellington gaol. Gaming Charge. H. C. Webster was charged by the police that on August 17 he used his confectionery premises as a common gaming house contrary to the Gaming Act. 1908. Detective Sergeant W. Kane conducted the case on behalf of the police, and outlined the charge. Defendant pleaded guilty and was convicted and fined £25 with costs 10s. P. J. Reid was charged with driving his car on June 21 in a manner which was considered a danger to the public. He pleaded guilty. Inspector Nicholson, traffic' officer, gave evidence as to stopping defendant and said he considered him not fit to handle the car. The speed of the car was normal. r Defendant gave evidence as to his condition and his method of always driving his car on the crown of the road. The Magistrate considered the case not a serious one and ordered defendant to pay a fine of £2 and costs. Licensed Premises. C. Larsen was convicted and fined costs 10s for serving liquor a'cTer hours on August 3. Arising out of the previous case A. J. Thompson, A. J. Goodin and H. J. Clifton were each convicted and fined 10s with 10s costs for being found on licensed premises after hours. Milk Vendor’s Case. J. Ean Fitzgerald (Mr Taverner) proceeded against Alister W. Tait (Mi Daniell) for the recovery of £5O for sale of a milk round. After hearing argument the case was adjourned. Juvenile Court. Several children were charged in the children’s court with damaging artificial wreaths and vases at the Clareville Cemetery. The juveniles were admonished by the Magistrate. Card Evening. The weekly card evening of the Boy Scouts was held in the Band Room evening. There was a good attendance considering the weather conditions. The proceeds on this occasion are to be devoted to the Scout movement. Prizes were won as follow: Ladies section. Mrs Finn 1. Mrs Brown 2; men. P. Hodder 1, and W. Ticehurst 2. Supper was provided at the conclusion of cards. Carterton Boy Scouts. The new probationary. Scout Master of the Carterton troop, Mr Fairbrother, with his assistant, is already showing great interest in the welfare and training of the boys and on Monday evening next he will make his debut among the boys. He hopes there will be a full attendance at his introduction to the troop to enable him to create the interest which he desires to be made among the young people under his control. Personal. Mrs J. A. Standidge, of Wellington, is the guest of Mrs H. Keenan, Park Read, Carterton.
