ALLEGED ARSON
HEARING IN CHRISTCHURCH.
TWELVE CHARGES AGAINST LABOURER. '
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day
Twelve charges of arson in and around the city were brought against Robert Hector Butcher. a labourer aged 39, in the Court today. The charges were the result of fires over a period of seven months in unoccupied sheds and buildings, mostly situated in the Addington and Spreydon districts.
The evidence indicated that the total damage was over £2 000. Sergeant Hodgens said he saw Butcher at a tire alarm box in Addington. He asked Butcher what he was doing there and accused said: ‘‘There is a fire in a house in Church Square." The sergeant added that although he could see no sign of smoke or flame, he sent a constable to the house, which was found to be on fire. He then detained Butcher. Fire Brigade officers gave evidence that every fire mentioned in the charges was of a suspicious origin. (Proceeding.)
