The former French Consul in Philadelphia, Mr Pazery, made a statement that General de Gaulle was fighting to a finish. Simultaneously, the Commercial Counsellor to'the Embassy, M Gar-reau-Dombasle, ignored Marshal Petain's order to return to France and declared: “I am working to liberate France.”
