HEAVY EXPLOSIONS
HEARD ACROSS CHANNEL FROM DIRECTION OF CALAIS AND BOULOGNE. INDICATIONS OF BRITISH ATTACK. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, September 4. Persons in coastal towns of Kent last evening heard many heavy explosions and also a rumble of gunfire from the direction of Calais and Boulogne. The detonations continued for over an hour, and it is believed the Royal Air Force for the second successive night was attacking guns and shipping near the Channel ports. An official spokesman in Berlin said that two squadrons of British bombers were seen approaching Berlin from the north-west last night. Only two pierced the city’s anti-aircraft defences and < the others turned back after skirting the suburbs. GERMAN CLAIM LONDON, September 4. Il is claimed in Berlin that 39 British planes were shot down in the battles yesterday and 12 German machines are missing.
