HINTS FOR THE AMATEUR
Fruit, Flowers and Vegetables WORK FOR THE WEEK VEGETABLE GARDEN. Plant out autumn-sown onions and make sowings of seed for later onion crops and for pulling green for salads. Plant out cabbage, cauliflower and lettuce. SowUor successiona! crops peas, carrots, radish, spinach and turnips. Sow asparagus in drills* 18 inches apart. Plant out asparagus roots for new ! beds. Plant out main-crop potatoes and earth up the earlies which are above the ground. Do not omit the spray when the plants are six inches high. Watch out for frosts. FRUIT GARDEN. Give plenty of ventilation on fine days in the tomato houses and keep a drier atmosphere when the plants are flowering. The earlier stone fruits are now in bloom, and, as soon as the blossom has fallen, spray with lime sulphur, one in 120, to prevent brown rot. Fruit trees which made poor growth last season should have a good application of fertiliser now. , FLOWER GARDEN. The planting of herbaceous perennials should now be general, but do'not plant while dhe soil is wet. Prepare the soil Tor new lawns as quickly as possible so that the seed can be sown before the weather becomes too dry. Prune The late summer-flowering shrubs that flower on current season’s wood. I ' Collect rooted suckers of border and decorative chrysanthemums and line out in nursery rows. Plant out pansies, violas, larkspurs, nemesia and carnations.
