FIFTY TO BE TRANSFERRED TO BRITAIN
In Exchange for Leases of Naval and Air Bases IN THE WEST INDIES AND NEWFOUNDLAND REINFORCEMENT OF ATLANTIC DEFENCES The United States is to transfer to Great Britain immediately 50 destroyers of the 1,200-ton type, in exchange for a 99year lease of naval and air facilities on the seaboard of the North Atlantic Continent, a Daventry broadcast reports. This was announced in London yesterday. The bases to be leased to the United States are in the West Indies, Bermuda and Newfoundland. This plan will reinforce the British Navy in the Atlantic, will contribute to the safety of the United States and materially strengthen the defences of North America as a whole. The first eight destroyers will be ready on Friday, when they will be sent to Canada and taken over.
