CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE
Sprinters for Wanganm (EY “THE GRAFTER’ - ) Old Bill won the good total of £3405 last season, being overshadowed only by Beau Vite and Beaulivre. His principal success was in the Wellington Centennial Cup, a 'race in which he beat Beau Vite after a great tussle. He was also successful in the Autumn Handicap at Trentham and was the runner-up to Beau Vite in the Awapuni Gold Cup. Old Bill is a candidate for the Flying Handicap at Wanganui and the race should help to fit him for more important races ahead. He is raced in partnership by Messrs H. H. Pharazyn and M. Greenwood, being a six-year-old’horse by a good sire of stayers in Siegfried. Kathbella may also start off in the same race. The Thompson Handicap at Trentham and the Hastings Handicap were twoi of her'four successes, while she failed by half a head to capture the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie, Black Thread being the winner. Kathbella races in the same colours as Yogi, those of Mr F. Ormond, and she is a five-year-old bay mare by Beau Pere from Royal Line. There are few more consistent mares about than Kathbella, which won £lB3O last season.
Gay Parade. ' Gay Parade looked as though he was in for a successful run in open company a year ago when he* was beaten in a head finish with Strip in the Spring Handicap at Ashburton and then went on to Geraldine where he had a runaway victory in the Squatters Handicap. His good form did not last, .however. as. though placed several times in ten other starts, he was opposing moderate horses and could not get a winning turn. Since that time Gay Parade has had a change of stables and A. J. Martin has him galloping well. He is in solid condition and if he can be induced to see his tasks through he will soon be a winner.
A five-year-old brown gelding by Nightmarch from Gay Sonnet, a Gay Lad mare and a useful one in her racing days. Gay Parade is to make his second attempt in the Spring Handicap. a seven furlong race, at Ashburton this month.
An improved Horse. Wagner, a winner at Riccarton. did not come to any harm by his efforts; in fact he looks an improved horse. Wagner is to be given a race at Ashburton and with average luck in the running he should prove hard to beat. At the Grand National carnival he won the Islington Handicap well from Wardress and a big field, but lost his chance on the final day in the Heathcote Handicap through being left at the start.
Galloping Well. Pleading continues to gallop well at Riccarton and on a reasonably firm '■ track he should be an early winner at j the spring meetings. The Solicitor--j General —Eulalie colt has ability above the average and he should do well for i Mr G. R. Macdonald, who was content to give him every chance, the colt being lightly raced as a two-year-old.
Top Rank. Top Rank is due to contest the hurdle race at Ashburton. He looks solid and well following a race in the Jumpers’ Flat at Riccarton, his only appearance at the meeting. Top Rank only had one race last season, the Dromore Hack Steeplechase at Ashburton in June, but he should show form shortly, states the sporting writer of the Christchurch “Star.”
Parrish Belle Dead. Parrish Belle, which was to be tried out at Addington again in November, died at Cambridge recently while being exercised by her owner, Mr A. G. Pillenger. One of the best trotters to race in the Auckland district, Parrish Belle shower most of her best form when trained by C. G. Lee at Epsom. She had a useful record in the Rowe Memorial Trotting Handicap, being the runner-up in 1932 and 1934 and winning in 1937, the last time she was successful in a race. Attempts had been made to breed from her in the meantime, without result. She was a bay mare, fourteen years of age, and was by Guy Parrish from Bell Bingen, a three-quarter sister to Great Bingen and Peter Bingen.

Stella Lux Injured. Mrs E. H. Merrylees, Olaki. has had the bad luck to lose the services of Stella Lux just at the time when the mare was in splendid racing fettle. On Saturday in a paddock Stella Lux's stablemate. Golden Memory, lashed cut and kicked the mare on a stifle causing her to become very lame. She is receiving treatment but will be out of work indefinitely.
Royal Chief Reaching Form. , Royal Chief has come to hand well, and it will not take much racing to have him back in his best racing condition. He is booked to race at Trentham next month, and the same programme is to be followed with Willie Win, who was pottered about the tracks through the winter, and is very forward. Sovereign Lady has also got through a good, deal of work in recent weeks, and should again be useful in middle distance races. Horses Tor Ashburton. > The Ashburton County Racing Club has received very satisfactory nominations for its spring meeting on Saturday of next week, and horses have been attracted from as far south as Wingalui. Riccarton stables will supply the bulk of the number, the list including Royal Chief, Willie Win, Sovereign Lady, Passaform, Entail. Retrogression, Shikari. The Raker, Leopardstown, Sir Frederick, Jewish Lad, Recollection, Court Yard, Sunnyland, Waka, Top Rank,' Land Raid, Royal Lancer, Pleading, Gentility, Whiphand, Sweet Mystery, Dispense, Sty-
losa, Welsh Fusilier, Gold Nugget, My Ship, Green Gables, Jolly Time, Blue Abbey, Eulogist, Farida, Wild Coon, Winning Rival, Prudent Prince, Settlement, The Wrecker. Wagner, Swordstick, Dunstan, Glenora Boy, Lord Midas, Nightglass, Don't Forget. King’s Toast, Guilder, Nightshift, Dinah Dhu, Gay Parade, The Vulture, Schoolgirl. Lady Magellan, Iceland Spar. Grey Silk. Muffler, Kilcato, Gay Thread. Great Night, Scarteen, Dranoel, Ryetown. Ferriby, Toro-Koura, Rebel Star. Night Dress, Night Hawk, Roy Bun, and Rebellion. ;
At Peak of Form. .Royal Star II (Holland) infused plenty of dash into his task when traversing a mile at a working gallop at Hawcra yesterday. He revelled in the going and, with the sting out of the ground on Thursday, his prospects will be greatly enhanced. Royal Star II is right at the peak of his form and he promises to take a lot of beating in the Marangi Handicap. Kilometre. Kilometre who has been working poorly, was shaken up before his gallop at Trentham yesterday and then ran seven in 1.35, running on well at the end. Royal Show, who went with him, was a long way behind. Kilometre carried his trainer, P. Burgess, who will ride him. Burgess will also ride Arctic Queen.
Toro-Koura Due to Reappear. Toro-Koura is due to make a reappearance after a long lapse from racing. At his best this Pink Coat gelding proved himself a high-class galloper, but his career has been unfortunately restricted through unsoundhess. He has stood up to the recent work allotted him, and it is to be hoped that he may be able to carry on.
Air Flight and Chief Lord. Air Flight and Chief Lord are making good progress under the charge of R. Brough at Hawera. Air Flight raced very consistently last season, winning more races than any other two-year-old, and her future seems assured. She will not be required to race this term till the season is well advanced. Chief Lord has built up nicely and is in great order to commence another preparation. The four-year-old son cf Lord Qucx won only one race last season, but his seven seconds and three thirds were registered in the best hack company and he gave every promise of developing into a better than average middle distance open performer.
Passaform Sound Again. Passaform has had a lengthy spell, but. is considered to have come sound again. His stablemate and half-bro-ther, Platform, has been given every chance to finish growing, and this Night Raid three-year-old is confidently expected to make good soon. Another relative of this pair, Odublin, bv Salmagundi, is stated by his trainer. E. J. Ellis, oi Riccarton, to be full of promise, and it is intended to race him m the McLean Stakes at Dunedin next month. Passaform and Platform will also go south.
Entail has not raced since he was purchased cheaply at Trentham last year by C. McCarthy, who, finding difficulty in keeping him sound, disposed of him to F. Hall, owner of Rebel Chief. Hall lias spent much time on the Posterity horse, who has certainly shown signs of late of being sound, and has been getting through some attractive work. He has not been raced since going south, and his future prospects will no doubt be indicated by his Ashburton form.
