ESCAPED PRISONER

RECAPTURED BY POLICE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WHAKATANE, September 2. Wet through, exhausted, and lacerated. after 48 hours without food, in dense bush near Fenton’s sawmill in the Whakatane district, Arthur Mitchell Wray, who escaped from an escort on Friday, was recaptured last night. Wray, aged 25, a motor-driver, of Te Teko. was on remand from Rotorua lo Whakatane on a charge of abduction. He claimed to be car sick, and when the escort allowed him to leave the vehicle the prisoner dived into scrub on the roadside. Police from Rotorua and Whakatane. under Sergeant M. Farrell. Whakatane, searched the district all the weekend. Persistent wet weather made the task difficult, and it was not til] Saturday night that Wray was recaptured.
