The death has occurred of Opotiki's oldest resident, Mrs Kateruri Matchitt, who was reputed to be 106 years old. She was more than 30 years of age when the Rev Carl Volkner was murdered at Opotiki in 1865. Before the Rev Mr Volkner went to Opotiki Mrs Matchitt warned him of the danger of hostile Maoris. When she learned that he had not returned she and her brothers, accompanied by some white sailors went by sea to Opotiki. The missionary was murdered by the Hauhau leader Kareopa and the white sailors were captured to await a similar fate. Mrs Matchitt and her brother rescued them, in return for which they received large grants of land from the Government.
