VITAL STATISTICS FIGURES FOR AUGUST. (“Times-Age” Special.) The following are the vital statistics for August, the figures for the corresponding month last year being given in parentheses:—Births, 6 (10); deaths. 7 (5); marriages, 6 (5). OBITUARY MRS ANNIE ALICE WATERSON. The news was received in Carterton on Saturday of the death of Mrs Annie Alice Waterson. wife of Mr Donald Waterson. of Lincoln Road, Carterton, at the age of 46 years.. About a week ago, Mrs Waterson was taken to Masterton Public Hospital, where an operation was performed. Complications set in and she did not rally, her death occurring on Saturday. The late Mrs Waterson was a daughter of the late Mr Holes, of Masterton, and Mrs George Stevens, of Belvedere, and leaves a husband, three daughters and a son to whom the sympathy of a large circle of friends will be extended. Deceased was held in high esteem by all who knew her, and her death will be deeply regretted. The funeral will take place on Tuesday at the Masterton Cemetery. Members of Totara Lodge of Druids, Carterton, of whom deceased’s husband is a member, are asked to assemble at the lodge room at 12 o’clock for the purpose of attending the funeral, which will leave deceased's residence, Lincoln Road, at 12.30 o’clock.
GOLF MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP. The following is the result of the first round of the men’s championship played on the Carterton links on Saturday:— Senior: G. S. George beat C. K. Goodin; J. Steel beat D. Taylqr; H. Dudson beat G. Brown; R. Fisher beat W. Wells. Junior: B. Bea ven beat S. Hill; F. Barr beat C. Callender; H. Colson beat * F. Knutson; Munro and Barrett are to play later. In the bogey competition the following were the best cards returned: —G. Hart, 3 up; G. Riggs,. 2 down; W. Candy, 2 down; R. Harrington. 3 down. G. S. George played particularly fine golf to finish in the championship with a 67 which is two strokes under the par of the course. In a match for the Hill and Hughes Buttons, Smith and Whitburn (holders) beat Hart and Lawrence 2 up. The following were the results of the games in the first round of the ladies’ championships:—Mrs Orr lost to Miss Berrill; Miss Armstrong lost to Mrs Murray; Miss J. Booth lost to Mrs Dwane; Miss McFarlane . lost to Miss Freer; Miss Robinson lost to Mrs Colson.
FOOTBALL REDMOND CUP. It has not yet been decided whether a game for the Redmond Cup will be played on Saturday, but if it is decided to continue the competition, Carterton will meet Greytown at Carterton. S.M. Court. The monthly sitting of the S.M. Court will be held in Carterton on. Wednesday afternoon. Personal Items. The many friends of Messrs E. J. Matson, J. Standen, and R. Nunn, who are inmates of the Masterton Public Hospital will be pleased to learn that they are making satisfactory progress toward recovery. . News was received in Carterton at the weekend of the death of an erstwhile Carterton resident in the person of Mr Fred Peters, of Hamua. For
many years deceased was resident of Carterton and will be remembered by the older residents. He was a prominent athlete in his young days. Heavy Fog. Carterton was enveloped in a very heavy fog last night. The military officers who have been doing intensive training at the Tauherenikau Racecourse, broke camp at the weekend and undergo further training at the Winter Show building in Wellington. Later they will go into camp at Wanganui. A large number of mounted men went into camp at Tauherenikau on Saturday for training purposes.
